Cruise companies must recognise that the world has changed and even grey cruisers are used to unrestricted free internet access. The issues concerning internet access spoils what ought to be a relaxing experience. First cruise, so impossible to compare to other ships or companies. Ship was about two-thirds full, so no queues and easy access to all facilities. Very relaxed. Most people go to bed at 10.30pm, so little night life. The extremely high cost of drinks might be a contributory factor. They made an error in what time to meet me at the airport, thought l should have arrived earlier, took quite an effort to persuade them to fulfill their responsibility and take me to the ship. However, the agent was extremely pleasant. All staff on the ship were polite and helpful. Food was excellent, as was the service in the Lido buffet and Rotterdam dining room. Not a lot laid on during days at sea to facilitate contact between the customers. I traveled alone and felt that the company did not recognise the needs of single passengers. The open dining facility in the semi-formal Rotterdam dining room meant that l was able to meet a wide and interesting range of people. Mixing with the elderly clientele that Holland America appeal to, was perfect for me, so the company would be high on my list for any future cruise.

Remember when hotels charged for internet, it was a long time ago, wasn't it?

Cabin Review

Large Ocean-View Stateroom
Cabin EE 3412
Traveled alone, so perfect. Plenty of storage and hooks. View of sea restricted by walking promenade directly outside and concerns around privacy when room lights were on.
Small water leak from air conditioning unit which took them two days to respond, but sent chocolates as an apology.
Lower Promenade Deck Inside Cabins, Outside Cabins

  • Bali
After disembarking at Singapore, traveled independently to Bali, staying at Sanur for 3 nights.
Busy roads with no break in building between towns, so no view of the countryside.
Temples as numerous as churches in England, but very ornate. Every other shop seemed to be selling very ornate wood or stone carvings. These are for locals as well as tourists.

  • Bangkok (Laem Chabang)
As l had already been to Bangkok, took a transfer into Pattaya, reasonably priced.
Noisy, sweaty meat market. Constantly approached by girls from massage parlours and girly bars, but not too intrusively. But difficult just to look as they were trying to catch your eye at every opportunity. Easy to get lost as everywhere looks the same. Lots of old western men with young girls. Sad to see the old men imagining they had 'proper' girlfriends and the young girls having to go out with men 3 times their age and bored. No moral judgement here, but just hope that these relationships can survive and give happiness to both parties.

  • Hoi An Walking Tour
Not a lot to see in Hoi Ann apart from loads of other tourists. Includes visit to Marble shop on way home, enabling the coach driver and others to earn commision.
Beware drivers adjacent to ship offering $10 trip around Da Nang. Took this as trip finished very early. There was a driver and his friend in the car, after 10 minutes they asked if l wanted to be taken to a massage parlour, no issue with this, but they were not pleased when l refused. Went to the market in the middle of town and left for 45 minutes. Once picked up, they asked if l wanted to go to the Marble shop, again. l refused, they then admitted they would get $10 commission, if l went there. Felt intimidated, so l agreed. Had to convince the saleswoman that l was serious, but needed to go back to ship to get my wife's approval. She wanted to come back to the ship with me! Eventually was able to get back to the ship without her. When back the driver wanted $10 plus $10 for his friend, as they could have driven off with me inside, agreed to pay his friend $5.

  • Sihanoukville
Took transfer to town centre. Coach besieged by people selling tours as we approached the coach park, some people did not disembark.
Once into the market, these people disappeared and one could walk around in peace. No one pressing you to buy things, you could just explore the stalls where whole families were living out their lives. They were as interested in seeing you as you were them. They were pleased if you took photos, so different to other markets we visited. The surroundings were not so clean as in other markets, but the people were clean, nicely dressed and very friendly.
Adjacent to the coach park was a drinks cafe, where westerners congregated, with free wifi, heaven! No western type cafes or restaurants.
