We married on the Ventura 5 years ago,so thought we would celebrate our fith Anniversay on a similar route but this time on the newest addition to the fleet. We have also had the pleasure of sailing on the Azura and Oceana. Not quite so many pluses for us as we were quite dissapointed with the ship or should I say certain new relaxed dress codes, on top of a few other niggles we haven't experienced before. So pluses first! Embarkation was so well managed, considering the scale of the operation in hand, it was made very simple and really stress free. The cabin A533 was compact but perfectly adequate, my husband is 6'6, he managed the slightly smaller shower room quite well, all things considered! Our very experienced cabin boy Mickey was so very helpful and extremely cheerful for our first two weeks, our new recruit Josef was just learning the ropes but was always smiling too. The staff throughout the ship were always happy, courteous and willing to share a few words with you. The food in the restaurants as usual was first class, we very much enjoyed The beach house as an alternative to the Peninsular restaurant.Sunny the waiter was so attentive and friendly. However we won't be opting for freedom dining again! Cleanliness and decor throughout Britannia was pristine and quite plush, seating in the Atrium was very relaxing and felt quite opulent. The Crows nest was a wonderful venue, spacious, beautifully furnished and fabulous entertainment from the resident pianist. Sam Bailey was truly amazing, what a wonderful character, so very natural. Unfortunately the sound system had a major fault, so Sam couldn't perform for her two shows, so she sat on a stall on the stage and spoke to the audience, Giving us an insight to her new life since X Factor and encouraging any questions from the audience. She was able to perform the next day, it was well worth the wait! What a fabulous show! Ok so now the minuses! The pagers given out if you are freedom dining.... not good, felt like we were waiting for a table in a fast food cafe. The Limelight club, the two option menus, were not very good, not enough choice,the extra £22 charge per person, certainly wasn't justified.so we didn't get to see one of the specialist acts in this venue. The soot from the chimneys was a real problem, literally covering the decks,sunbeds etc, clothes too, you could take your clothing to the reception, who would arrange for a free washing service. Not very acceptable to see this amount of soot everywhere and not very healthy either I would have thought. The live lounge, as this is a drinking venue, people would sit and watch the first performance, then stay there drinking for the rest of the evening, so it was totally impossible to get a seat, or to actually see the performance on the stage. It got quite uncomfortable in there as the seated audience, were cross that people were standing around the venue obstructing the view. Four times we attempted to see a show here but just gave up as it was packed out. The only time we did manage to get a seat, was when a DJ was playing, sadly the problem then was, 10/12 year olds dancing on the dance floor, at 11.00, if felt a bit like Butlins! The biggest problem for us was the very relaxed dress code, P & O is obviously now hoping to attract a different passenger onboard. A dress night is exactly that, or it should be! An alternative of a day suit for gentleman, with a tie or rather than evening dress, a cocktail dress for ladies. If you do not wish to partake,then you should not be eating in the specialist restaurants or the penninsulor or Meridian. The buffet / Horizon restaurant should be your only eating venue. I was shocked on several occasions to see T shirt,jeans,trainers combo being worn, bad enough on casual nights but unexceptable on formal nights! I asked one of the waiters why this was allowed? His response was , it's the modern generation madam! Yet it quite clearly states the dress code in brochures and evening paper. I saw several men walk through the horizon bar with no shirts on at all! I overheard a lady on a subbed telling her friend, she will Finnish off her water bottle as she will be filling it with vodka for the evening! What with a couple not even making it onto the ship, as they were detained on the plane on the way out from Gatwick! It does make you wonder if this relaxed dress code is inviting a different type of passenger. Disembarkation was a simple procedure also, however the disgusting mini bus that was sent to transport us to the airport was a death trap and broke down in transit. After the terrible fatal accident that had occurred to the passengers on Azura in Dominica, we were all rather concerned that the fault alarm was sounding practically from the start, it was struggling on any incline,so other vehicles were overtaking us on blind bends etc, then when it did get to the top, speed dangerously along very unkept roads full of huge potholes. It really was quite a frightening experience. I'm not blaming the driver, but please P & O check the condition of the coaches you are packing your passengers onto and the roadworthyness of the vehicles provided. So to sum up Britannia, for us not a terribly good lay out, the glass lifts are better on your other ships, somehow it simply doesn't flow. The atmosphere just isn't as good as our previous cruises, so sadly a thumbs down from us!
