Let me say that we are the first people to say that people who want to complain will always find something to complain about.  We believe life is short, to make the best of what you have and enjoy it while you can.  Never before have I written a negative review of anything.  Unfortunately by the 3rd day on this cruise I felt the need to contact American Express and dispute the charges of the cruise as our problems were not being addressed after contacting management 3 times.  Issue #1:  Rowdy, drunken, loud guests partying two decks below on the walking deck.  We really are nice, easy going people, honestly, but after being woken up every night between 1 and 4 AM by these rude guests and never getting any rest on a VACATION, we were pretty upset.  We work extremely hard (own a retail store, used to working 60-70 hours a week and this was our 1st week off in two years) and really thought nothing could possibly get in our way of having a good time.  So every night we called management/security for help and they would play dumb.  They would come up to our room and say, "We went out there and there's no one at the shuffle boards".  We'd make them come into the room and listen and it wasn't until we threatened to go down there and take care of the problem ourselves that security would actually go down and take care of the issue.  Come to find out, the shuffleboard equipment is supposed to be locked up by 10 PM every night; this rule was never enforced and we were woken up and kept awake every night (until the 5th night when another room opened up) between 1 and 4 AM by drunken college kids playing shuffleboard and drinking.  I wish they sold ear plugs on board or offered some to us, that would have made me happy.  Unfortunately I didn't even think to bring any.  So if you do go on NCL, bring some ear plugs, the rooms are poorly insulated.Issue #2:  Staff was indifferent and overworked which led to poor service.  Service in buffet and main dining room was terrible.  Servers didn't understand basic English like "Coffee", "Milk", "Toast", etc.  And we are always extremely polite and smiling; having worked in retail for so long we know that you get better service from people if you are polite, pleasant and understanding.  These servers didn't even look at you, they were so cold and closed off.  I think if tipping wasn't automatically included they might be more inspired to work harder and be more pleasant or actually do what they are paid to do.  This indifference led to so many customer service problems but I won't go into detail here.  If you want to read the whole thing (along with more detail about how seriously rowdy the guests were) please go to www.room9092.com where you can read the detailed letter that we sent to NCL post cruise.Issue #3: Food.  Freestyle is a very unique concept and the easy going side of us loved the flexibility to eat whenever we wanted, where we wanted and dress however we wanted.  What we didn't like was in order to get any decent service or food you were really limited to eating at the surcharge restuarants.  For the price of this cruise, we would have expected that level of service and quality to be available in main dining rooms as well.  That said, we did enjoy the sushi, hibachi and steakhouse.  The Italian restaurant and Mexican restaurant left something to be desired and we did not try Le Bistro.  The buffet service was the worst of all which was really frustrating because some of the food was pretty good in the buffet, but by the time you sat down to eat it, it was cold.  There were too few stations to adequately serve the number of guests on board, along the same note there was inadequete seating for the number of guests.  That buffet area should have been twice the size to accomodate a ship of that size.  This lead to food getting cold as your wandered around trying to find a seat and staff was never available to help seat you.  We're also early risers so I can't imagine what is was like in there by 9 AM.   Issue #4: The way NCL handled our complaints.  In order for a company to be successful, especially cruise lines, they rely on guests being satisfied and becoming repeat customers as well as referring their friends and family.  That is how we have grown our personal business over the past 9 years and how many companies survive hard economic times.  After complaining about noise issues for 5 days we were finally moved to a mini suite that was quiet at night.  However we had just shelled out over $5000 for a week vacation and were only able to rest for two nights, this did not seem right to us.  We wanted to Cruise NCL again and were hoping they would offer us a deal on a new cruise.  The onship manager encouraged us to take it up with NCL Customer Relations once we got home.  We disputed the charges using our American Express Card, but were told we needed to contact NCL directly.  We did so and I sent them a detailed letter explaining every issue that made this cruise difficult to enjoy, but also explained the aspects of the cruise we liked and hoped we'd be given the chance to try them out again in the future.  We basically felt as if we'd been had.  We worked exteremely hard to be able to go on a vacation like this and after cruising on Royal Caribbean and Celebrity we had a certain level of expectation.  Unfortunately, NCL was way below par.  After contacting NCL we received two $300 vouchers.  We were a little insulted.  I contacted them again, next time they sent us two $600 vouchers.  It's something, but I still don't think I'll book another NCL cruise.  They nickel and dime you to death; even if I book an inside room on a 5-7 night cruise, I'm still looking at another $1500 in food, drinks and basic excursions.  After the poor service we received I think I'd rather spend the extra money and book another Celebrity.  It's a shame, I was really hoping we'd have a nice relaxing vacation, especially since it was so easy for us to get to the port.  Leaving out of NYC was really nice for a New England resident.  The ship itself was very nice, the public areas were comfortable and had some pretty funky furniture.  The Casino was the largest I've seen on a ship and the Gym was nicely equipped and open 24 hours.  Customer service needs serious improvement, though and their "Freestyle" dining needs some work.
