I spent pre-cruise nights in Boston, and post-cruise nights in Quebec City, on this Canada/New England cruise. The independent stays really enhanced my cruise experience as i was able to explore the two cities in depth rather than spend just a few hours in port. The Norwegian Dawn was nicely refurbished and looked fresh. I stayed in a midship ocean view cabin which was conveniently situated but, unfortunately, any cabin I chose required that I pay a 100% single supplement penalty for traveling solo. (Other companies either waive the single supplement or charge a reduced supplement.) The dining staff and cabin attendant offered great service, and the evening stage shows were amazing. Having already paid a double fare, I did not wish to pay for specialty restaurants. The menu options in the main dining rooms were just average, and I found the buffet—which was rotated throughout the day even between meals—to be more appealing in terms of variety, quality, and healthy options. Moreover, reservations were not necessary for the buffet, and wait times were minimal.

Most disappointing to me were the: (a) room amenities and (b) shore excursions. I was dismayed to learn that hair conditioner is provided only to balcony cabins and higher categories. Ocean view and lesser cabins are supplied only with shampoo and no conditioner. It was appalling to see the extent to which a large cruise line would skimp on a basic amenity to boost the company's bottom line. As for the five shore excursions I bought through NCL, all of them required long motorcoach rides, with very brief opportunities to walk at each destination. This may be fine for those who prefer to be sedentary. However, if you prefer a bit more exercise, choose walking tours if offered, or book your tours independently.

The tour of Forillon National Park was enjoyable, scenic, and permitted self-exploration within the allotted time.
