We selected this cruise because it was going to 5 islands, 4 of which we had not been to before, and because my husband does not like too many days at sea.

Embarkation was interesting. We were Concierge class and were told we could arrive early, embark early, and have lunch in the dining room starting at 11:30 am. We arrived at the port around 10:45 am and stood in line. A dock worker finally told us we could leave our luggage with him and go into the line for people with no luggage so that we could enter the terminal. All of the sudden a half dozen dock workers showed up and there was a long exchange in spanish and basically the second group said no luggage could be handled until noon. I called the Celebrity cruise 800 number and spoke with a woman in the "issues" department - her response was that she was not aware of any issues with the dock workers and she ended the call. Finally, a security officer told us we should get on the ship and she assured us our luggage would make it into a luggage bin and not disappear from the sidewalk where we were told to leave it. Fortunately, it did arrive at our room 2 hours later.

I read several negative reviews prior to sailing about the age of the Summit and the quality of the food. The ship is older but still a beautiful ship. The dining room with it's full wall of windows on the back is very elegant looking. We were assigned Table #1 on the upper level along the railing by the stairs and our view every night was great.

Cabin Review

Concierge Class 2

Cabin C2

We booked this cruise through a Celebrity agent. I specifically asked for an aft balcony cabin and we discussed cabin 9164, but when I received my confirmation it was for a cabin on the port side. During the booking process I expressed concern about the cabin being below the Sunset Bar but was repeated assured by the Celebrity agent that this would not be an issue, so I agreed to book the cabin. I called Celebrity back to cancel the booking and they indicated that cabin 9164 was approximately $600 more per person than what I had paid but they would give it to me for $100 more per person. Big mistake on my part.

The Sunset Bar is open until 11:30 pm every night. Anywhere between 12:00 midnight and 1:30 am the crew would drag all of the tables and chairs across the deck above us to reset the area for the next day. We called the Concierge desk every night and indicated that once again we had been awakened by the noise. They would apologize and promise it would not happen again, but it did every night while on the ship. They offered us vouchers for money off of our next cruise, but those did not make up for the lack of sleep. It was suggested that maybe we could just take a nap since our sleep was interrupted, but there was activity on that deck all day long so a nap was not an option - plus taking a nap than keeps you from partaking in afternoon activities - so it was not the best solution.

When we entered the cabin there was a strong, unpleasant odor. We found our cabin steward, Solome, and he immediately came in and poured something down the bathroom drain and some of the smell went away, but every time we would enter the cabin again there was a sour odor. We went to bed, found the mattresses to be very uncomfortable and in the morning when I rolled over i found the source of the sour odor - the mattress. I called the Concierge desk and asked that the mattresses be replaced because they were flat and bulging out at the sides from use and they smelled bad. They came up immediately and replaced the mattress pad and added a foam topper (that was too small for the mattresses) and the smell went away. I don't know what we slept on the first night, but it was pretty gross. They never did come back and replace the foam topper.

As for the cabin itself, it was an assisted cabin so it was wider and larger than the other aft cabins and the balcony was very large - plenty of room for my hammock. We really liked the cabin itself, and our stewards - Solome and Henrick - were excellent, but the location was not very well thought out.

Port Reviews

St. Croix

We only walked to the port area and browsed before returning to the ship, but from the ship it was very picturesque.

St. Thomas

We docked in a secondary dock that was too far away from the main shopping area to walk - you had to take a cab ride for $4 to get there so we opted to walk to the small port - which was nothing special at all. When we arrived it was raining and when we left it was pouring rain. We went to the pool and hot tub on the ship.
