We are a couple in our mid to late 50s and this was our 22nd cruise overall, 7th on Celebrity. We chose this cruise due to the ports and itinerary. We love the M-class ships and sailing with Captain Kate was a plus. Against our normal planning, we decided to fly into Newark the morning of departure. It's only 2 hour flight from where we live and we felt we could save money and get to the ship on time with no issues because we booked with Choice Air and took the Celebrity transfer. In execution everything went off without a hitch and we arrived at the ship around 11:30. It was a bit stressful, though, so future cruises we'll return to our arrive the day before normal plans.

Embarkation was a breeze. It took us about 1/2 hour to get through the security line, check in, and onto the ship. We chose not to go to the OceanView buffet to avoid the crowds and took our lunch from the Pool Grill. Excellent burgers, as usual, and a view of the NY skyline highlighted this time. Our cabin was ready a little after 1 so we took this time to put some of our carryons into the cabin.

We had cabin 1138, an aft A1 Aqua. We lucked into this cabin a little because of a series of moves caused by a suite upgrade 5 days prior to the cruise. We learned of the opening by keeping up with the roll call (a lesson to all- Cruise Critic roll calls are fonts of information and opportunity). I wish I could say it was the greatest cabin ever, but it had some issues. The aft balcony view was fabulous and the balcony was big enough to include a full lounger as well as the two reclining chairs/footstools and a table. It has partial privacy as beyond a certain point can be viewed from people sitting at tables in the aft oceanview bar. Privacy wasn't an issue, though, as the balcony is deep and the area near the door was completely private. There was a small problem with soot throughout the cruise. Nothing major, just something to note. The sliding glass door had a tendency to open/close on its own, despite being very difficult to open initially. The water pressure in the shower seemed very low but improved when I asked our room steward to see if he could get someone to fix it. The moist annoying thing about the cabin was the constant/random "rattle" from one place over the mirrored wall. I could tell previous inhabitants had tried some "fixes" for this (a small piece of paper towel and another piece of paper were jammed in the area where the rattle occurred). Fortunately, I had ear plugs and got used to it after a few days. If you're in any way sensitive to noise, this is probably not a good cabin for you. With the balcony doors closed, the room noise from the rattle (and people jogging on deck 12 in the morning) were irritants. Sitting on the balcony, you can count on noise from the oceanview bar as well as the rooftop terrace movie screen. I should add that because of where we were cruising and the weather being pretty chilly, there was little of this external noise on our cruise. I would definitely not book this cabin on a warmer cruise if are looking for a quiet balcony. The highlight of the cabin was Akhmad, our room steward. He made sure we were comfortable and had everything we needed the entire cruise.

Port Reviews

Portland (Maine)

We rented a car and drove to DW's ancestral family farm. We then drove to Portland Head Light, which was gorgeous. We really enjoyed walking around the old port and waterfront areas. Lobster lunch was delicious.

Boston

We had a wonderful time at the Boston Tea Party show. The rest of the time was spent walking around Quincy Market.

Bayonne (Cape Liberty)

Inside the terminal is fine. However, there is lots of construction ongoing around that area. Leave yourselves plenty of time to get through it.
