We wanted to do a European river cruise for years, and after asking around, decided to go with Viking River Cruises. We've taken to ocean cruises on Carnival (Mexico Pacific coast and Alaska to Vancouver BC, and this was our first river cruise. We vastly prefer the Viking experience. The smaller ship doesn't skimp at all in amenities, at least the kind we look for. As their ads say, no swimming pools or drinks with umbrellas. We had local guides for every stop, and the individual audio devices ensure you can hear the narrative just fine without the guide shouting. We enjoyed a mix of included and optional tours, augmented by some supplementary helps graciously suggested by our Concierge. For example, by wife had some temporary difficulty walking distances, so our Concierge suggested a "rickshaw" tour of Salzburg, which my wife wouldn't have been able to handle otherwise. The extra cost was very reasonable and well worth it. We were "five star" pleased with the accommodations, the outstanding food, the warm and gracious service and the many things included in the price. We opted for the veranda room (not the French veranda) and found it to be an excellent balance between price and comfort. At the end of the river portion, we took the optional three days in Prague. This was another example of Viking's excellent service. Most tour companies would have put us on a chartered bus, said goodbye at the ship, and then had someone at the hotel in Prague to greet us. With Viking, we had a Viking guide with us on the whole trip to Prague, plus a dedicated driver for their transfers between Budapest and Prague. This really helped out with the rest stops and especially during the lunch stop, since the menu was all in Czech and the English of the staff was not the best. Arriving in Prague, we were competently turned over to a full time resident staff in the hotel that gave us the same attentive service as on the ship. We're already looking forward to our next trip with Viking, which will be a Christmas markets tour next year.

Cabin Review

Veranda Superior
Cabin A 339
Excellent value for the money. More room between the bed and the sliding glass to the verranda than with the French veranda. The ability to sit "outside" and enjoy the passing sights, perhaps with some wine or just snuggling, would not have been possible with the French veranda. While the veranda suite would have been nicer, we really wouldn't have used the extra space that much. We prefered time in then public area, or on the sun deck watching both sides of the river, while underway.
