We had done this itinerary 4 years ago and enjoyed it so much we wanted to do it again.
Ports: Being the second visit to the ports allowed us to be a bit more selective of what to see/do. For the majority of the ports we explored on our own and had a wonderful time. We also did one Celebrity Excursion and two privately booked excursions. The Celebrity excursion was great, but we liked the others because they had fewer people so we had a more intimate and custom experience. Would definitely look into excursions on sites such as Viator.
Ship Info: The Equinox is a beautiful ship. We had Aqua Class staterooms and would definitely recommend this if your budget allows. The extra amenities in the room were OK, but we really didn't notice that. What we did like was the dining experience in Blu. The service and food were outstanding. We didn't have dinner anywhere else! Also liked the unlimited access to the Persian Gardens. Even the buffet (Oceanview Cafe) far exceeded expectations. The layout, with serving stations, was great as it prevented any long lines. The variety and quality of items was also amazing.
This cabin is mid-ship at the "bump-out." We were next to the suites and very close to the elevators, but never heard anything due to a set of sliding doors between the elevator lobby and stateroom corridor. The cabin is a standard size, but the balcony is at least double the size of the standard.
We spent 6 days prior to the cruise touring this amazing city. We stayed in the Gothic Quarter (at the H10 Raco del Pi).
A great way to see the coast. We left from Salerno and cruised by chartered boat along the coast with a stop in Amalfi. Even though the weather was changeable, it was a great excursion.
Had a lovely lunch and walk through the village before returning to Fira.
While the site was pretty amazing, we didn't take a tour and so much of what we were saw didn't really register. The posted signage was more scientific in nature and you didn't get a real flavor of the people and location.
We rented a car in Fira (be sure to get an International Driving Permit) and drove to the prehistoric ruins at Akrotiri then drove along the coast to Oia.
The city of Ephesus is amazing. We toured this 4 years ago and there has been a lot more excavation since then.
We rented mopeds (note that for anything larger than a 50cc bike you need a motorcycle license). We then road out to Paradise beach for a day in the sun. Beautiful beach and being early October it wasn't too hot or crowded.
Interesting to walk through the town and see the shops and buildings.
