Trip Details
  • Sail Date: Sep 2016
  • Destination: the Western Mediterranean
  • Cabin Type: Interior Stateroom

Ship:

Being the largest cruise ship in the world, I was concerned with a sold out ship being a logistic nightmare. To my surprise, the ratio of staff to passengers and vast ship size alleviated any issues of the feeling of overcrowding. Tip: the running/walking track on Deck 5 is a VERY quiet getaway with a few deck chairs on the stern.

Cabin:

The inside cabin met our needs well with our cabin steward being exceptional. For a quiet cabin, we booked on Deck 9 toward the ship's bow.

Dining:

WindJammer (buffet) delivered a high quality and variety of selection. Finding an available table can be challenging at times, but not a showstopper. A well kept secret is breakfast at the Park Cafe where passengers slowly discovery this option towards the end of the cruise.

Entertainment/Activities:

Puzzle Break escape room and Abyss Slide is well worth the adventure.

Both Ice Skating shows and Grease Broadway production were well executed.

Columbus: The Musical starts off awkward, but picks up speed and ends strong.

2 shows not worth attending for adults: Magician headliner and the afternoon (day 6) Aqua performance.

Ports and Shore excursions:

For active adults, Harmony of the Seas cancelled or do not offer options:

1. Hiking Royal Path (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) shore excursion: Cancelled.

2. Marmore white water rafting (Civitavecchia, Italy) shore excursion: Cancelled.

3. Cinque Terre (La Spezia, Italy): not offered.

Port Tips:

1. La Spezia, Italy: Cinque Terre is a must for hikers. After utilizing a free shuttle from the ship to the cruise terminal (aka Terminal Crociere di La Spezia), purchase your Cinque Terre Card for 16 Euros per person at the cruise terminal where they will provide you a free Cinque Terre train schedule and map. Walk 1 block north to the bus stop in front of the large round church Cattedrale di Cristo Re. Take the public bus 3 or S or L for free using your Cinque Terre Card. Travel for 15 minutes and exit at the La Spezia Centrale train station. After validating your Cinque Terre Card at the train station, travel 20 minutes NW to Monterosso al Mare and hike SE 75 minutes toward Vernazza and another 75 minutes to Corniglia. The trails to/from Manarola and Riomaggiore were closed as of Sept 2016 due to landslides.

2. Marseille, France: You will have 2 logical options to travel from the ship to the city center (5 miles): a. $18 per person round trip RCCL bus shuttle to/from the Old Port, b. Free shuttle bus to the Les Terrasses du Port shopping center. We opted to walk from the ship for 8 minutes along the green designated walkway pass the Seaman's Club/Security checkpoint to take the free white Les Terrasses du Port bus shuttle. Les Terrasses du Port shopping mall was great and only a 10 minute walk from Cathedrale La Major and an additional 5 minutes to the Old Port.

3. Palma de Mallorca, Spain: From the ship, walk 6 minutes on the designated walkway to just outside the port to the city bus stop across the street from the Museo Historico Militar de San Carlos. Take Bus #1 for 1.50 Euros per person to any stop along the waters edge with the Catedral de Mallorca being a primary must-see.
