The value of this river cruise was not good. We had the top floor rooms which cost a bit more but it was over $1000 / night per couple! For this price I expected the best of everything and the biggest disappointment was the arrogant and sometimes rude behavior of the dining room staff. After complaining to the Hotel Manager things got better but it is a shame to have to be confrontational to get good service!

The food was very good but not great! The entrees and sides were very good but it was mainly deficient selection of deserts and some did not taste that good and were disappointing. The included wines served with meals were the best I have had on a cruise or at a restaurant!

While we enjoyed the 7 night cruise very much I could not recommend Avalon for the aforementioned issues or a Rhine River Cruise itinerary. You see a lot of sites in a short period of time but the pace of excursions is left little time to really explore the port cities. This is not a fault of Avalon but rather this style of cruising. It was neither relaxing or romantic! For the $7500 cost of this cruise, it would be much more cost effective and better sight seeing to rent a car in Amsterdam or Zurich and drive the Rhine River Gorge, taking at least 2 weeks. You could stay in 5 star hotels and eat like kings for $7500!

Port Reviews

Beautiful city and a good tour.

We walked the city on our own.

A beautiful city and much of it can be seen from the canals.

The actual Rhine River port was not in the list. It was Breisach in the Baden region of Germany and near Freiburg.

Avalon arranged a bus tour of the Black Forest and it was a joke. Over 3 hours round trip with a monotous non-stop talking tour guide. The only stop was at a tourist trap Cuckoo Clock shop and it appeared they had a symbiotic relationship with the cruise lines. This was a very touristy cheap trip which I regret taking!
