We travelled on Nieuw Amsterdam on the round trip to Vancouver,we were especially looking forward to our call at Skagway and our excursions there, however on the morning of our port call we watched with disbelief as the ship approached Skagway where two other ships had already docked minutes earlier and then after a couple of minutes suddenly turned around and steamed away, the captain made an announcement to say that due to a SE wind gusting to 38 Knots he could not make port-well i'm sorry i have been on many ships and on crossings in conditions a lot worse than that and have never had a port call aborted without the ship at least making another attempt.
There was plenty time to wait for conditions to improve (as they did) and try again but it seems the decision may have been made for other reasons.
No attempt was made by the captain or any of his senior officers to make a personal appearance to explain events-very poor PR.
