We were not impressed with the cruise. We HAD been impressed by the pre-trip communications including the emailed recipes, which set a high bar for cuisine.
I must first say that the staff were marvelous, and the piano player Bobby was excellent.
Unfortunately, despite the promises from the email, the food was barely mediocre. Who serves Eggs Benedict with runny whites??? or Goulash that was impossible to chew??? or leave the smoked salmon out on the buffet so long the bread was hard and the edges of the salmon dry. Or call a bowl of spinach and a bowl of lettuce with dressing a "salad bar". The only redeeming feature was their soups that were mostly superb. Definitely not up to the standards of other cruise lines.
The cabin was pristine and stayed that way for the whole cruise. Compliments to our steward. That said, the room was much smaller than we had anticipated and we had to do what we called "the room dance" to be able to pass each other around the bed. There was nowhere to sit other than the bed or the small, hard stool under the deck. Friends had a balcony which was rendered useless many nights because we were rafted with other boats.
The included excursion was very interesting - the first part was "Nazi Nuremberg" showing us sights such as the rally grounds and the second part was Old Town and the castle with free time to enjoy the outdoor market.
We did the optional tour to the Abbey, which included a beautiful ferry ride. The church was beautiful. The walking tour of the city was highlighted by the cathedral.
The sail through the Wachau Valley was the best part; beautiful.
