  3. Costa Luminosa
We mainly chose this cruise because it took us from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean. We were very sceptical of cruising with Costa because of the reviews on this site. However the experience couldn't have been better. Costa Luminosa is a bit smaller than other cruises we have done (MSC) and we enjoyed that. It enabled us to meet more people and make some firm friends who we'll keep in touch with. The only thing lacking was enough pools. On a day at sea you almost had to queue to get a swim! We had a premium balcony cabin which was large and comfortable. We liked having a seperate sofa to sit on when we were resting, and the balcony was a great place to escape to if we wanted a little peace. We always had breakfast and lunch in the buffet, and this is where we met most of our new friends, just by sharing tables. The food was good with lots of choice. My only negative would be that there was far too much salt in all the savoury food, both in the buffet and in the restaurant. The entertainment was a bit hit and miss. There were some grea artists playing the various bars on the ship and we rotated around them most evenings. There were also a handful of amazing shows in the theatre, and a handful of not very amazing shows. But we never lacked entertainment somewhere on this ship. We also enjoyed the guest speaker who gave lectures on the history of the area we were in on days at sea. Service was very good and any reasonable request was delivered promptly and with a smile. We didn't do shore excursions at every stop, but the ones we did do were really good. Great local guides. The only downside was having excursions sharing two languages. It was ok when we understood the other language, eg French or Italian because we got the whole story. Unfortunately other languages left us in the dark when you could tell they had more of the story. Overall a great trip and would certainly travel with Costa again.

Cabin Review

Balcony Premium
Cabin BP 6290
Cabin was a good size, plenty of storage space. Only downside was that the balcony doors aren't sliding doors so almost impossible to leave them open to enjoy the lovely sea air.

  • Amsterdam
We have been to Amsterdam many times and still find things to do. We walked around enjoying the place, spent time at the Rembrandt museum and sat on a bench with our picnic lunch where we met a lovely gentleman and chatted for over an hour!

Excellent excursion. A bus tour of the city sights followed by a canal cruise and then lunch at Carlsberg brewery. But the best was a visit to the little villlage of Drogen.

We didn't spend anytime in Dover choosing instead to go to Canterbury. There we saw th cathedral, went for a punt on the river and had a lovely pub lunch.
The shuttle bus to and from the town to the ship was very good.

Honfleur is so pretty and we enjoyed the tour guide showing us the beautiful buildings and telling us about the history. Only a half day tour, but we would have liked to spend a bit more time there.

What a delightful place to just wander around. You can see it's not a place where there is great wealth (monetary) but the streets are beautiful to walk about. We started our walk at Piazza Comercio walking through the town to Piazza Dom Pedro IV. Then we walked up the hill to the Castello S. Jorge. What amazing views! We took so many photos this day as there was so much to see. Definitely have to go back as we missed going up in the old elevator.

Took the shuttle bus into town as we have been there before. We mainly just wandered but made sure to see the Mercato Central, Plaza dos Toros, window shop along carrer Colon, and a walk through the park del Turia.

  • Santiago de Compostela
This was a truly amazing day! The bus journey to Santiago is quite long but we still had plenty of time there. First we walked around the town and the outside of the cathedral. So interesting. Some people chose to attend mass at the cathedral, however others wanted to walk around the town. We explored the town from one end to the other. It's really a lovely place. Clean, lovely people, great coffee etc. Lunch was in a lovely hotel on the square overlooking the cathedral. Lovely local food and it was hard to drag ourselves away.
After lunch we toured the cathedral and the museum. Stunning!
My overwhelming memory of the day though is seeing pilgrims arriving in time for mass and the joyous way they greeted each other.
