Highly attentive staff - very eager to please and accommodate. The Second City shows were lots of fun. The entertainment was --- entertaining. I enjoyed access to the walking deck - got in lots of steps each day. Our cabin steward, Ryan, was helpful without being intrusive. the free style dining made each day stress free. The only glitch was the immigration day - I understand that it's a necessary part of the process due to government regulations but NCL could make it less stressful, even enjoyable, with some music, entertainment, and some fun food snacks which could help to pass all the time spent waiting in line.
It was an easy ship to maneuver. The GEM may not have all the 'bells and whistles' of the new and bigger ships but the overall caring and enthusiasm exhibited by every staff member was memorable. I'd much rather be surrounded by a happy and caring staff than huge sculptures and glass works. The only negative, perhaps specific to this cruise, was the limited access to the Spinnaker Lounge as the sun was setting. The space was reserved each night for a private function and that venue was the perfect viewing spot for a sunset.
I must mention and commend Bernadette, the dietary nutritionist, as well as the chefs. Food allergies and limitations can be such a huge problem when traveling. She helped me plan my menu each day. The food was delicious, fresh, and cooked to perfection. I was pleasantly surprised by the service, as I've traveled on another cruise line and have always had some sort of food glitch. I will definitely sail with NCL again!
WOW - take the public transportation - the trolley was $2 for a 45 minute ride! We got off at 49 (?) steps so we could do the Cliff Walk. It was a brilliantly sunny and warm day. Even saw some seals sunning themselves. Walked to the Breakers. Took a tour there. Then took a public bus, another $2, back to the port where we waited in line for the tender back to the ship.
