Marvellous Mediterranean and a moderate cost

  • Destination: the Mediterranean

Late summer holiday with family at a time and price suitable for all of us.

We have sailed with Cunard 8 times and this was the best so far...excellent ports of call, food, entertainment, stateroom cleanliness and service.

On board the highlights were the excellent musical entertainment with harpist, strong quartet, pianists and the Queens Room orchestra.

We love to dance and were delighted that in the first week Eugene and Darya from the Ukraine were on board to teach Jive and Cha Cha, while in the second week, Wilfred and Ilona from Gernany dazzled with their Viennese Waltz. In the middle of their show dance, Ilona lost one of her shoes, but carried on dancing as though nothing had happened...what professionals!

The highlights of the ports were:

- Rome, where we hired a private taxi from smartcruisetours.com, with our patient and knowledgeable driver Christian taking us to Circus Maximus then onto a great view of Palatine Hill, a visit to the Colosseum and Roman Forum, then onto Piazza di Spagna, after that the Trevi Fountane, followed by a visit to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona before returning to Civitavecchia.

- Monte Carlo with a two hour bus tour of all the sights

- Kotor in Montenegro, which was outstanding with a beautiful bay, stunning architecture, cheeky cats and lovely restaurants.

- Barcelona and Venice which need no description - always new sights in little side streets and shops to discover.

All helped by clear blue skies and a cool breeze for walking around and on deck sunbathing.

We also saved money by not buying any of the overpriced tours, spa treatments or wines, purchasing the soft drinks package and bringing on our own wine for consumption on our joined balconies.
