We very disappointed in the Koninngsdam. My husband and I are 4 star mariners and have cruised on several of the "dam" ships. We did not care for the changes in entertainment from previous cruises. For being billed as the "music" ship, there simply was little to no music/dancing most of the time. There is no ship’s orchestra (except when they played once in the showroom) and no small dance bands. The music available was simply performance art. How many times in a 21 day cruise can you listen to the same dueling pianists or 17 minute marathons by the same jazz/blues band every performance??! The layout of the ship was cramped, confusing and difficult to walk thru on the cabin floors and the Lido. The 10th floor Lido area has these curtained off lounges that are difficult to walk around/thru and several guests commented it was like walking thru someone's bedroom!! Especially ruined is the promenade deck, where near the dining room it has to be single file one-way traffic. The general decor of the ship seems to be ...back to the Sixties. I think of it as "Madmen" gone mad. The decor of the public spaces was awful in many places with colors and patterns that made you think a "cacophony of UGH!". The main dining room has all the ambience of A HOSPITAL CAFETERIA. It is noisy, too bright, cramped and difficult for diners and staff to maneuver. The crows nest advertises 270 degree views...however huge brown mushroom like objects have sprouted and red geometric lounges obscure the views. I offered to take a chain saw and level them off so everyone could see but staff did not think that would be tolerated. The designer of the bars never sat on the bar stools and tried to enjoy a drink. Most are terrible with the distance from bar to stool twice what it should be or the stools are slanted to guarantee you will have an accident. Gone is a quiet relaxing library. The Explorations Cafe has been moved to occupy a third of the Crows nest ...and it has very few books, but has all the traffic and noise of the Crows Nest activities. The lack of information was also irritating. You get no information on ship location (latitude/longitude, miles traveled, sea depth, etc. )... just a map of where you have been and where you are going. There was exactly one sailaway party during our 3 weeks at sea. It consisted of cheese trays provided by the ship and wine you bought....no hosts and no music. The sailaways were replaced on this ship with 1 1/2 hr. narrations by the location guide as you put to sea. I also agree with the comment of a fellow traveler who complained that daily activities especially on sea days almost always involved additional fees or were designed to sell you something. If you book tis ship take lots of your own books and a kindle filled with entertainment.
Cabins are nice with new flat screen TV's and all the usual ammenities, This cabin was t the back of the ship with a larger balcony.
a beautiful flower filled city to visit on foot.
My husband really enjoyed the Oil museum and I did my own walking tour.
It is a wonderful city to explore on your own. We did the Rembrandt House which is a little out of the way but well worth it, It is where he lived and also had his studio. It is a well done tour.
