Chose a rather limited Alaska itinerary in favor of simplicity of travel with eight year old twin grandchildren on their first cruise. Couldn't have been happier with the choice, as we were even able to take public transport to and from the ship. We also opted for a suite, both for space and amenities; and on this itinerary at least the price was reasonable. Again, very happy with the choice. We had a great accommodation with excellent accessibility to all areas of the ship, readily available snacks and privacy because of the lounge access, greatly appreciated the included laundry and valet service and concierge assistance with all other issues, such as reservations, shore excursions, and other issues as they came up without having to wait in line at the front desk. The ship was beautiful, everything was in good condition, the food was better than on our last few HAL cruises, entertainment top notch, and as always, children were treated royally by staff, many of whom were missing their own. This was an end of summer cruise, not too many kids on board as school already started in much of the US. The Club HAL program didn't hold much interest for our children, who much preferred to hang out with us or with other adults and children in the crow's nest or at the pool. They did however greatly appreciate the classical music onboard, as well as the electric violinist duo and the illusionist. I suspect that they may now be hooked.

Perfect first cruise with grandchildren

Cabin Review

Neptune Suite with Verandah
Cabin SB 7047
Huge with vastly more storage space than was even needed (more than one closet per person). Dressing area off bathroom. Minibar which worked. Adequate veranda with table and chairs. Only complaints were that proximity to the service entrance to the lounge did mean noise at opening and closing, before 7 AM and after 8 PM; and that there was no privacy curtain between sleeping areas, which meant that we had to do with poor lighting while kids were trying to sleep.

  • Tracy Arm Fjord Catamaran
This was excellent and well managed. Didn't get to see South Sawyer but still had plenty of glacial experience.

No bears, only 2 whales but a good buffet which was not really anticipated.

  • Saxman Native Village
Our supposed tour did not actually include the longhouse or performance, merely a view of the totems. This we could have had for much less using city bus, but at least we had some narration by a tourguide who was also a carver.

Saw one golden eagle and a bunch of salmon, no bears unfortunately. We got a much better price for transport than an onboard tour would have been, but probably could have gotten there by public transportation.

Booked locally via M&M, had a wonderful educational experience led by a multiple Iditarod contender and a plus was being able to cuddle puppies. Oh yes, and the gold panning and 40 degree below were all at the same site.

Great fun with kids, booked locally with public transpo and saved a bunch. Also took home about $25 in gold, (or so they said) as a souvenir...

Albeit expensive, this is a not to be missed experience for any Gold Rush buffs. Also rather spectacular scenery. We took the late afternoon trip which was a great decision because we had only 1/2 car occupancy. Every other trip was packed.
