Welcome back home...which is what The Queen is to us!

Sail Date: May 2009
Destination: Transatlantic
Embarkation: Southampton
We are both platinum Cunarders, so not much to say but the ship lived up to expectations with TRUE White Star service. The crew and staff made us feel at home. One dining room maitre'd even remembered our names and this time it's been 26 months since our last visit! That was impressive and he didn't look, either as my partner uses his MIDDLE name as a name and not the passport (first) legal name so he didn't peek...he remembered!

The Queen has the best staff on the seas...from the pools to the TV to the internet the ship functions flawlessly and the crew makes things happen. Unlike the not-so Grand Princess (see our other review) we took over, this return from the UK was professional, we were not nickel and dimed to buy this or that every 5 minutes and things like washers in the laundries were still free ($1/wash and 50¢ dry on Grand Princess).

Activities and cruise staff were NOT obtrusive but things like the RADA classes, More plays and the movies were well-attended. They do need to tweak the focus on their planetarium (only one at sea) as it was often out by a bit, but it's also free, fun and the shows were great in there.   We did many activities from art lessons (painting) to pool time to the Canyon Ranch Spa. The spa is worth noting went out of their way for passengers. They had some PH problems in the main pool, closing it several days and refunded $20 of EVERYONE who bought a week's pass, meaning you got four days, paid for just 3 and were treated kindly.

The only real complaint we heard was with the TV as we got ONLY Fox "News" for some days and Fox is, well, right-wing. Most passengers wanted CNN or BBC or anything but this constant conservative slant, but the tech folks said they couldn't receive CNN for much of the crossing, which was sad. We chose to read the ship's papers (British, Canadian and US were all offered free at breakfast or for cabin delivery every day) and skipped Fox "news" totally. This is a minor problem, but one they should work on.

Dinner service was OK, but they did try though the wine steward needs replacing as he seemed aggravated we didn't buy from him as we don't drink. That's his, not our problem. Our cabin steward (Rachel) was superb and we added a nice tip to what she receives for exemplary service.

All in all The Queen is just what we have come to expect on our numerous voyages...the best!

Great cabin...they do need to upgrade TVs to flat screens but am sure that's coming. Bathroom was adequate, but needed a light in the shower (do they hope you can "feel" your way?) The balcony was a nice upgrade they gave us, but regardless inside or out we love all the spaces on QM2.

Port and Shore Excursions

What can we say, but fast disembarkation and as always good to get to the airport and OUT of NYC. Too dirty, loud, expensive and crowded for us. Too bad such a grand voyage must end in this port, but at least unlike Ft Lauderdale, they are efficient and do a good job finishing the cruise here.
