We have previously taken the St Petersburg to Moscow river cruise with Viking, a Basle to Cologne cruise with Riviera and the Hurtigruten return trip between Bergen and Kirkeness. We booked the Scenic cruise on the basis of the all inclusive price, the cabin size, itinerary (Amsterdam to Budapest) and the claims about food quality. Although there was plenty to be enjoyed on the trip it did not deliver the increased quality that it should have considering the price level compared with our previous trips. The good bits were the cabin which was spacious and comfortable (although the air conditioning never succeeded in getting the cabin temperature down to the level that we wanted). The balcony was a nice to have but there was actually very little time available to just sit and watch the world go by. The shore trips were too long and too many but there was very little point in staying on board as the boat seemed to be always moored well away from anything on shore that could be explored individually. The trips also seemed very much aimed at an audience that had never seen a building that was more than 50 years old so became very repetitive. The food was not as good as we expected. Breakfast was the best meal and if that standard had been maintained we would have been happy. Lunch was repetitive (pasta dishes almost every day) and dinner varied between quite good and awful (rubber lobster on one night). I suspect that the kitchen was not large enough to produce the variety that they were attempting. One meal that we were offered was in the Italian Restaurant which was pretty good. One of the other guests that we got to know was invited to have dinner with top deck passengers on what was called La Rive (actually a large table within the same dining room as the rest of us) and said that it was very pretentious and not very good. There were a range of short afternoon entertainment sessions which were generally well presented and interesting. They ranged from a string quartet to an oompah band! The lounge area on the ship looked quite tired. The double glazing had blown in at least 6 windows and some of the sofas were starting to look threadbare. On the positive side our butler was very helpful and the Tour Director was excellent. The electronic devices that allowed us to listen to our tour guides worked well but the other facilities that they offered such as details of landmarks along the river were very haphazard and became such an irritation that we just switched them off. If I was booking this trip again I would look much more carefully at alternatives and believe that I could have saved quite a lot of money by paying for drinks and tours that I actually wanted rather than having it all packaged.
