First time cruiser's here. Wow what a wonderful time. We loved just about everything on the Amsterdam. We chose HAL because of the traditional touches on board along with the size of the Amsterdam. We never waited on line for anything and never felt crowded. The ship was attractive, well maintained and spotlessly clean. Only one of us qualify's for a senior discount currently. The guests skewed somewhat older but there were several families and 30 somethings on board too.

Our cabin was well designed and very comfortable. Exceeded our expectations. We chose open seating As you Wish dining and enjoyed meeting several new folks at breakfast and dinner in the La Fontaine. We enjoyed our table mates so much we thought they must have matched us us with folks with like interests. That said we also requested a table for two occasionally and again never waited to be seated even without a reservation. Food was very good and included eggs Benedict for breakfast, a prime rib dinner along with a surf and turf night. Can't say enough about my perfectly cooked lobster tail which is hard to pull off without overcooking. Only complaint would be sometimes the food lacked temperature.

Generally ate at the Lido and Dive In snack bar for lunches. I stuck to sandwiches and salads although hot entrees were plentiful in the Lido. Burgers and fries at the Dive In were tasty. Ice creams and desserts rounded out the selections. We also ate at the Pinnacle Grill (King Crab Legs & made to order souffle) delicious! No complaints with The Canaletto in fact we had a beautiful sunset view whereas The Pinnacle does not have windows.

We also had two special events during the week on the Lido deck; a Salmon bake and Ice Cream social that were delightful. No excuse to go hungry on this ship. Numerous opportunities for shipboard activities unfortunately we really did not take advantage of we were so busy watching whales and relaxing poolside. We did attend one of the show's which was ok not quite Las Vegas. Several lounges offered live music which we enjoyed albeit the setlists were repeated pretty much every evening. The A Team in the crows nest worked so well together we spent most evenings there. Jerry & Oliver, John & Michele were terrific.

In fact we only encountered one crew member who was not outstanding. From the front desk to the wine stewards, waiters and coffee baristas everyone was so very pleasant and eager to please. We did purchase the beverage package and did not have to think about our beverage tab - saved money too. The pools and hot tubs were clean and well maintained. Hubby said the fitness center could have used some attention a few bikes were in need of repair.

We disembarked at every port with no wait or issues. In Juneau we took the shuttle to Mendenhall Glacier and explored on our own. We did two tour excursions; kayaking in Sitka and a float plane into Misty Fjords and thoroughly enjoyed both. Very professional operators of both excursions. We had outstanding weather all week including Hubbard Glacier day (our Captain got us pretty close compared the the larger Ruby Princess) and the Northern Lights that made a 1 1/2 hour appearance the same night! A day we will never forget. We have traveled extensively to several continents, Alaska will remain one of our most memorable scenic destinations. We had such a perfect weather week I fear we can never go back lest be disappointed. We will definitely remain loyal to Holland America and cruise with them exclusively, no reason to look elsewhere.

Cabin Review

Large Outside Stateroom (fully obstructed views)
Cabin HH 3384

Our cabin was a marvel of engineering. Well designed and very comfortable. Although considered a fully obstructed view we still had a view and plenty of daylight through the full size window. Located on the lower promenade deck just a few cabins away from the elevators and outside deck doors. Ivan and Igor our cabin stewards kept our room in top order. When we left the cabin they had the room clean and refreshed within minutes - I still don't know how they did it so quickly.

Hiked to Nugget Falls from the visitor center. Very scenic and encountered a porcupine on the way!
