I have never been on a Princess cruise before, but I really wanted to take a cruise around the British Isles. The itinerary was wonderful and the price was substantially less (approximately 40%) than the offering of the usual cruise line that we had previously used. We were very pleased with the trip and will cruise with Princess again.

Itinerary: Rating=10. This itinerary was absolutely wonderful! The stops through Ireland and Scotland really permitted access to a significant portion of the places I wished to visit. It permitted us to truly experience the British Isles and it included Le Havre/Normandy/Paris as well. I think the only difficult thing was that the Le Havre stop was the day before we came back to port, making it difficult to maximize the port stop and get everything packed and ready for disembarkation the next day. However, I still wouldn't want to lose the stop if no other options are available.

Embarkation and disembarkation: Rating=10. This went smoothly. The safety drill was one of the best in that the information provided was thorough and guests congregated inside large areas.

Port Reviews

Southampton

I give Southampton a great review because of the convenience of getting to the port from my hometown. We stayed at Premier Inn Southampton West which was clean and convenient.

St. Peter Port (Guernsey)

St. Peter Port was a lovely little town with a lot of history and shopping within walking distance from the tendering drop-off. We DIYd this stop and visited the La Vallette Underground Military Museum which we walked to. I think the only downside was that it was a very short stop at this port and the tendering took a long time.

Cobh (Cork)

We hired Paul Brown to take us to the Ring of Kerry. Travel time to and from took much of the day, but I knew that up front. Unfortunately, the weather was overcast and drizzly. However, the views were still beautiful. I want to visit the area again.

Dublin

We hired Tours By Locals to give us a tour. The itinerary included: Glendalough, Avoca Handweavers, Trinity College and the Book of Kells. Fabulous itinerary and guide. Highly recommend.

Belfast

We hired Tours By Locals and visited Belfast, Dark Hedges, Giants Causeway, Carrick-a-rede rope bridge among other stops. Absolutely perfect itinerary and tour. I would highly recommend.

Greenock (Glasgow)

We hired Discover Scotland for our tour of Loch Lomond, the Trossachs, and Stirling Castle. The itinerary was exactly the one that I wanted for this stop. Although our tour guide was courteous and professional, we would not recommend the tour company. We were in the back seats of the bus and had absolutely zero leg room. Extremely uncomfortable day-long trip. We also could not understand the guide due to the sound-system, etc. It was the only tour that was a miss on this cruise. If we had a better tour, I'm sure the port would receive a 5 rating.

Kirkwall

We DIYd this port by renting a car and touring the island's main sites. We saw: Skara Brae Village, the Ring of Brodgar, Maeshow Grave, St. Magnus Cathedral, among others. This arrangement worked perfectly. The tour of Maeshow Grave offered on location was wonderful. NOTE: You have to pre-book reservations at many of these locations like Maeshow Grave--even though we had the Scotland Explorer Pass.

Invergordon (Inverness)

We booked a tour with WOW Scotland Tours. Although it was a large bus, I would highly recommend this tour company. Itinerary: Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefield, Brodie Castle, Inverness, Clava Cairns. The tour guide was fantastic.

Edinburgh (South Queensferry)

The family visited Edinburgh in the morning and split up in the afternoon. We booked a quick tour with Rabbie's City Tour. I didn't realize (or remember) that the tour was an audio tour which wasn't really my cup of tea. It did drive us around and give us a quick overview of the city. In the afternoon, two of us visited St. Andrews on a ship shore excursion and two of us remained in Edinburgh to visit Edinburgh Castle.

Le Havre

We rented a car from the Avis in Le Havre near the train station. I would NOT recommend renting from that location as it took us an hour to get the car checked out (only 1 customer ahead of us) which put us behind schedule and the car's air-conditioning did not work. Because we lost an hour, we were unable to visit Honfleur, but we traveled directly to meet our tour guide in Bayeux. The tour guide was booked through Normandy Sightseeing Tours and he was fantastic!. His name was Guillaume (William in English)
