This was my first Alaska cruise. Did the 13 day land/sea starting in Fairbanks not much going on there. went to denali stayed at mckinley chalet, little concerned that in the back lodge no front desk with employee staffed there. didnt take the food plan for land portion. found an excellent breakfast joint in Anchorage called snow city cafe,4th ave and L st. The wesmark hotel n Anchorage is in need of a makeover. Also, bring toiletries and over the counter medicines as pharmacies were not near either hotel in Fairbanks or Anchorage.
As for packing layers are recommended ski pants that come off are a good idea as well as raingear, turtlenecks, cotton cargo/capris. Evening wear, dont overdo it as i found myself so tired that I wound up eating on the lido deck where dress is casual. The staff on the ship was excellent. Entertainment there was a comedian, dance shows, and pianist. Gym classes offered, pilates, yogut, cycling, idk if additional fees are charged. Did the on deck 5K for cancer, 12 times around the deck. the age of the passengers were older but some families were among them HAL club for kids. Bar entertainment was excellent.
Boarded the ship in Seward, Glacier Bay truly once a lifetime experience, Haines, not much going on in port, $15 ticket for Hammer, American Bald Eagle, and another one. A free bus takes you around. Juneau did the whale watching and Mendhall Glacier tour saw some whales. Ketchikan which was the prettiest port had the lumberjack show and did tour of Saxman village. My friends did the helicopter ride to top of Mendhall Glacier and loved it. In Ketchikan, another passenger did the salmon fishing tour caught one and had it shipped it home. Plenty of shopping in Juneau and Ketchikan. In Ketchikan souvenirs were cheaper in the stores to right of the ship.
