My husband and I are regular cruisers. We love the convenience of unpacking only once and visiting different ports of call. This trip was special because of Solstice’s Master, Captain Tasos Kafetzis. He was a hoot! I don’t think we ever encountered such an engaging captain in all our years of cruising! What a funny guy! We were glad that we caught his last sailing before he left for vacation. The other people who made this cruise special were the naturalist, Brent Nixon (a former green beret instructor) and his cultural historian wife, Miss Amanda (Mary Amanda Fairchild). Both lecturers were informative and interesting. We learned a lot on this trip, not just about the Alaskan wild life (both man and nature alike), but also about the Titanic’s sinking and the significance of the last song that was played before it sank (and why so many people got it wrong). Who knew we’d be learning so much while on a cruise?
EMBARKATION:
We took the first flight out of New York to Seattle on the day of embarkation and will never do it again. The weather forecast was severe thunderstorm for that morning. That’s when we learned that Delta charged $200 pp to change a flight. We were lucky. Not only did our plane left on time, but we also arrived 30 minutes early.
The stateroom was adequate with nice amenities. Bathroom had very nice shower head -- and plenty of storage space. The noise from the public area above us was unexpected, but we were compensated for our inconvenience. The bed was very comfortable.
When the cruise finished, we stayed o/n at the Cedarbrook Lodge near the airport. It is a wonderful oasis – beautiful Zen-like surroundings, great spa services and gourmet restaurant. Complimentary shuttle van will pick you up from the airport. If you want to go to downtown, the driver can drop you off at the Link Light Rail station. This place is only 5 min away from the airport but we never had noise problem. A wonderful place to stay in Seattle!
Since we arrived in the afternoon, we had lunch at Tracy’s King Crab Shack in town. The shack looked small, but there was ample seating in the back. Bring your own picks, as none was available. We were glad we came here first because later in the afternoon, the line was very long! After lunch, we bought the bus passes to the Mendenhall Glacier at a booth in town ($63 r/t for 2). The bus was run down but the driver was on time. The path to the Nugget Falls is free. The Mendenhall Glacier is located right next to it. It takes about 45 min each way to walk from the entrance to the waterfall
