Perfect Ship for Mature Cruisers

Regatta Cruise Review by markam

Trip Details
  • Sail Date: Jul 2016
  • Destination: Alaska
  • Cabin Type: Concierge Level Veranda Stateroom

We have been on only two ocean cruise (but 5 river cruises) and both on the Regatta. I imagine there are better ships out there (i.e. Regent level) that could be worth all 5 stars but for our tastes, the Regatta is just fine and would have no qualms about sailing on her again.

If necessary, some easy ways to save would be to make your own transfer, airfare, trip insurance and some excursion arrangements.

Our cruise was overbooked and we, along with many fellow passengers were offered generous compensation to reschedule.

While there were planned activities available for young people, this line is doesn't focus on that segment of cruisers so there were few on board. Average age seems to be 60-ish.

Food was generally excellent in any of the dining venues. There is a formal main dining room, two specialty dining rooms (steak and Italian) with slightly better atmosphere + a nice buffet (excellent ocean views). You are given the choice either to sit by yourself or meet new friends by sharing a table.

ALL staff was very courteous and friendly.

Wines and excursions were a bit more expensive than I think necessary but quality was always very good.

A high point for us was afternoon tea in the 10th level fore lounge and watching the scenery in style. Sitting right in front of their string quartet was another treat.

Showroom entertainment was perfect for our mature age level. 2 superlative entertainers and all others just fine.

Very smooth operating procedures - they seem to have all the details covered.

Cabin Review

Concierge Level Veranda Stateroom
Cabin A3 7103

We were on an Alaska cruise in a 7th deck concierge level veranda cabin but if we had to do it all over again we would choose an ocean view to save a few bucks since the weather was often too cool to use the veranda much. On our previous Caribbean Regatta cruise the veranda was very nice to have.

While compact, our room hand adequate storage and was always kept perfectly clean stocked plenty of towels etc. Quiet and convenient enough. Rooms located between the fore and aft elevators might have been a little more convenient.

Bed was very comfortable but the couch would have been easier to use for older folks if

higher.

It was nice to have access to hot, room service breakfasts and other Concierge level benefits.

Sea Otter and Wildlife Quest

VERY informative, friendly and capable captain. Think his name was Sonny. Boat was very clean, comfortable and safe. Say many whales and a few otters.

Butchart Gardens

Beautiful but stay at gardens was WAY too brief. Could have stayed at least another hour - especially since we had plenty of time before dinner and departure.

Scenic Drive

Informative driver and saw about all there was to see. Nice scenery but probably should have taken the train tour.

Trekking

A bit more rigorous a hike than I planned up the mountain but with good scenery and glacier views. Excellent guide.

Wrangell

Nice, homey town that has few tourist areas yet but we really liked walking around to see a bit more realistic area. No jewelry stores in sight. Very informative local museum and gift shop.
