We booked this trip because of the opportunity to spend two days at the British Open and to be able to get an overview of the Bitish Isles. The cruise offered excursions to the Open for $200+, but we, and many passengers, got there quicker by train for about $10. First the best part of the cruise was the tremendous selection of fresh fruits and vegetables at all meal times, in the formal dining and buffet restaurants. Service in all restaurants was excellent. You can eat junk food of course, but lots of healthy choices, maybe not divinely inspired favors, but plenty of plain choices. The restaurants wait staff was great, taking care of any request, bringing extra steamed vegetables upon request among other thoughtful touches. Biggest disappointment was the "low energy" culture of the rest of the staff. the staff seemed overworked and disinterested in passengers, they guys who work the Martini bar need to give lessons to the rest of the staff. The last night in the formal dining room 3 at our table ordered the kale salad which when served was just a bowl of iceburg lettuce with no kale at all, even our waiter admitted there was no kale in the salads. We never did meet our cabin attendant till the last two days. The music was boring, the shows were boring, and the entertainment brought on board for entertainment was boring. Definitely geared to a more sedentary customer. Most disappointing was a Scottish bagpipe dance group that was a very amateur group of young kids learning to dance and going thru the motions (saw better street performers in town) with an old guy for a leader who should have retired 5 yrs ago. Embarrassing is the best description. Biggest safety issue was the tendering process in some ports. The staff was not prepared to get everyone off the ship n a timely manner, in fact in some ports the process was so slow that on a 8 hr port stay, twice we only got to spend 4 hrs actually ashore. The staff gives priority to shore excursion customers, which is grossly unfair to customers who chose to explore on their own. We all paid equally for access to the ports of call. The captain finally engaged an additional shore excursion boat from one port to efficiently get guests ashore. Still, we lost 4 hrs ashore that day because of the slowness of the exit ...... Really makes you wonder how efficient the staff would be in a real emergency. Minor things need tweeking, like old tired decor, newer bath towels and a deep clean of the cabins. More contemporary music in outside spaces. This was a noticeably unhappy, tired crew, just going thru the motions. One problem the crew had no control over was someone around us smoked in their cabin, and every afternoon and evening our room was filled with cigarette smoke.

This is NOT a luxury ship.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Veranda (partially obstructed view)
Cabin 2C 7132
Lovely deck with full sliding doors. Asked to have mini bar emptied so we could use it for treats and sodas bought in town. Refrigerator did not work, milk spoiled and nothing got cold. Plus the refrigerator was stocked with beverages from Christmas, half eaten cans of chips, dirty cocktail napkins, and had a sticky mess stuck to bottom of refrigerator. Clean room ,but they need to supply new towels, towels were worn out and flat, and we were only given two towels and only if we threw the used ones on the floor. This is not luxury by any definition.
