We loved the Serenity- having sailed mostly on Celebrity and once on Azamara, this was a clear step up.
What's superior about Crystal: food, service and spacious, uncrowded public areas.
Food- delicious but flawed at times e.g. meat entrees were frequently overcooked and fish dishes no longer fresh toward the end of our sailing. There is such an abundance of great food and the staff is so accommodating, you don't feel irritated when you send something back.
We disembarked in Whittier, a tiny, scenic town surrounded by snow capped peaks. The trip to the Anchorage airport took 2.5 hrs- arriving at 9a. By following the ship's cautious, conservative recommendations, we allowed way too much time for our flight out. We could have easily made a 10a flight or if wanting to be extremely conservative, in case of delays at the Whittier tunnel, an 11a flight out. Check to see how many other ships are disembarking- we were the only ones and there's no immigration/border patrol to go through- we breezed out of the ship's terminal.
Anchorage is flat and with the gray, overcast skies, looked quite unattractive the day we were there. I'm sure surrounding countryside is lovely.
Stunning beauty- we were so fortunate about the weather- quite clear and sunny at times. During glacier viewing periods, we did not enjoy crowded Palm Court and the outdoor area at the bow on Deck 12. Intermittent Park Service ranger announcements also detracted from the experience. The aft deck off the Lido cafe on Deck 12 was always uncrowded, peaceful and perfect for viewing.
We took a private taxi tour of Juneau. It was gray and drizzly but Mendenhall glacier was beautiful and it was interesting seeing Juneau.
Great, scenic wilderness in Alaska but the towns were not very appealing.
