We chose the Koningsdam because it was new, Holland America Lines reputation for service, and the itinerary. The itinerary was fantastic with so much to look forward to in the Baltic Sea. We were disappointed and underwhelmed generally as the cruise was more expensive than others and there was nothing outstanding that would make us loyal HAL customers.

The Vista suite was not worth the extra money we paid. Our room steward was efficient but we hardly saw him, and service was just adequate with nothing extra. For example we asked for the daily Australian news sheet and we got it once. We had to leave a note for soap when we ran out. Used glasses were not removed promptly.

We had anytime dining and with our group of 10 we could only get a late 8.30 time. We then chose to eat earlier with one other couple and generally got a table about 6 pm. The menu was disappointing as it had limited options, and food was bland and serving sizes very small on occasions. The steak was the best meal in quality and consistency. Appetisers were manly soup and vegetarian, not enough meat options. No scallops, prawns or lobster meals. No theme to the menus as on other ships. On the positive my husband and friend had a special order of snails every night, Service in the dining room was variable, at times waiters were unfamiliar with the mocktails and not very friendly.

Cabin Review

Cabin BA

It was nice to have a new cabin, and the bathroom was lovely.the cabin was small compared to other cruise lines and only about 30cm longer than the basic veranda suites. The cabin plan was impractical as the bed was by the Window and you had to walk past the sitting area to access it. There was a small coffee table near the sofa that was in the way and unusable. The verandah was disappointing in that on the 8 floor there was no cover on the balcony and as it rained frequently it was always wet. On other cruises I used to to enjoy a drink on the balcony but not this time.
