Background

This was our eighth cruise on HAL but our first cruise on the Prinsendam. We were a little apprehensive because we had talked to people on previous cruises who either loved or hated this smaller ship. A couple we had met that hated the ship called it the “Prisondam” because they felt so cooped up on it. Well, having sailed on her, we are pleased to say that we now fall into the category of people who love the Prinsendam. We are perhaps fortunate that the ship had undergone a $16 million retrofit earlier in the year, so everything on board was in tip-top condition. So, dear reader, ignore all of the pre-retrofit cruise critic commentators who say that the ship is tired and dingy.

Cabin Review

Deluxe Verandah Ocean-View Stateroom

Cabin AB

We had booked an ocean view cabin, but a few days before the sail date we were upgraded to a veranda suite, AB202. The location of our particular cabin was at the rear of the ship on deck 8 so we didn't have too far to walk to anywhere. On the negative side, to get to our cabin in the evening we had to either walk on one side through the Explorer’s lounge after waiting patiently for Adagio to finish playing, or hold our breath and sprint through the smoky casino on the other side. (We must confess that we sometimes rudely walked through while Adagio were playing). If it had not been for the upgrade, and we must admit to really enjoying our balcony for this scenic cruise, we would not have chosen this cabin location. However, this location would have been excellent for people with mobility issues or for smokers that frequent the casino. We complained to the front desk about a bad smell preventing us from sitting on our balcony on a couple of occasions when we were in port. We were told that it resulted from a combination of ship’s waste vent locations and unfavourable wind direction and there was not much they could do about it.
