My Wife and I cruised to Alaska on the Celebrity Solstice in late June. It was awesome! We had a great time. The Celebrity Solstice is a 1st rate luxury ship. Our embarkation was perfect. We waited in no lines. Celebrity has their act together. They have plenty of People to help. Debarkation was perfect. We were called at 7:50 to leave. We got off the ship, found our luggage, went thru customs, caught the celebrity bus to the airport, checked in and were past airport security by 9:30!! The Solstice is spotless clean. Someone was always wiping and cleaning. The layout of the ship is great and it never seemed crowed. Our room was an even numbered room ,starboard side, on the 8th floor. We were about 5 or 6 rooms down from the elevator which was perfect for quiet and convenience. This side is the best side for viewing the scenery. The ship is built for scenic viewing. It has viewing spots, inside, outside and a combination all over the ship. Our favorite was the 14th floor sky view lounge. It has a full view of the front and both sides. The food was great in the main dining room. The service was perfect. The Buffet was good as well. We didn't eat in the specialty restaurants. We thought we'd use the ones that were included in Our price instead of paying for a specialty restaurant . The shopping was good and their specials had good prices. The cruise director Ken and His assistant Baldo were always accessible and did a great job. The Captain was nice and did everything He could to give Us a perfect cruise. All of the workers were friendly, They all worked hard and did an amazing job. The entertainment was good. We took the Pilots choice to 2 glaciers helicopter excursion in Juneau. It was expensive. If it's in Your budget I'd recommend it. It was a once in a lifetime experience. In Skagway We took the white pass railway excursion. We probably wouldn't do it again, Nothing wrong with it. We had beautiful scenery but by the time You get to skagway You have seen plenty of beautiful scenery. The trip is about 3 1/2 hours so it got a little long. I guess if You spend 7 days on any ship Your going to find a few minor issues. Here are the ones We found. Most are very minor. The Buffet doesn't open until noon for lunch. A lot of guest are from the eastern or central time zone so for Us this is late for the 1st few days until We got used to the Alaskan time zone. Additional the buffet was crowed at noon. If they opened earlier it would help. Their were plenty of choices on the buffet but they got a little repetitive day after day and the vegetables were scarce. The ship is kept too warm inside. I guess when the weather is in the 50's outside then they don't use the air conditioner. Most of the time I was too warm to wear long sleeves. The craps table at the casino had a $10 minimum. Most I've been to have a $5 minimum. This kept many people from playing. It kept Me from playing until the final day. I'm not on a cruise vacation to win big money nor lose big money. I'm their to have a good time. I'm sure to high rollers the $10 minimum was fine. Otherwise the casino was good. I didn't like the pushing of the specialty restaurants. We were disappointed in the art auctions. They advertised an under $500 auction. We went. 1st the auctions don't start at the advertised times they start about 30 minutes later, I guess it gives them more tiem to sell You. If You advertise a time I think You should start at that time. The 1st item offered at the under $500 auction started at $16,000. Some pieces started under $500 but most didn't. If You advertise an under $500 auction then all of the items need to start at under $500. All week they advertised a raffle where You guessed the weight of a bronze statue. They advertised it for the 1:30 auction on Wednesday and You had to be present to win. At the auction end they didn't give away the prize. They said they'd give it away at an extra added auction the next day, We felt like this was just a way to get Us to come to the extra added auction. If Your having a must be present give away then You need to have the give away at the time and day You advertised. We felt like We wasted 2 hours of our cruise. If these few things I listed are all I could find wrong on a 7 day cruise then I think a celebrity cruise on the Celebrity Solstice is incredible. I can't imagine taking an Alaskan cruise on any other cruise line or on any other ship. We will do it again, hopefully next year.
