Please excuse my english. I'm German. This was my fifth cruise. The first cruise was in 1993 on the beautiful Regent Sun from New York to Montreal. We have made already two cruises with Norwegian Cruise Line. This was our first cruise with HAL. Maybe it's interesting for you to read a review from a German perspective. We enjoyed a two-week cruise on brand new cruise ship Koningsdam. The two-week cruise started from Amsterdam to Norway at 29th of May 2016. The whole ship looks very elegant, oriented on ships of past years, but with top modern details. The ship was packed with passengers. Due to the cold, but clear weather much focused on the interior areas which were thereby partly overcrowded. On board were omnipresent about 60% Dutch, the other guests were Americans, Canadians and other nations. The majority of guests were around 70 years old. A conspicuous number of guests had a walking disability. The Koningsdam has two pools which are elegant, and several hot tubs. The Lido pool can be covered by a glass dome. This was advantageous on a cruise in northern climate. However, the covered pool area has not been sufficiently heated. There is also a nice big screen, which is used for playing movies in the evening. During the cinema shows salted popcorn and potato chips were served. And from 9.00 pm even nachos with cheese sauce. For the cinema shows loungers were solicitous provided with Headrests and blankets. The Show Theater "World Stage" is spectacular with multi-purpose stage and an impressive, the stage encircling HD screen. Very good sound, perfect lighting. It was spectacular, when the encircling HD screen was used for shows. But also as background for other music performances or as a video wall for other events was this "curved screen" fantastic. The ultra-modern show theater is one of the big pluses of Koningsdam. The idea to create three different lounges on one deck in a row, where every evening live music is performed, is very good ("Music Walk"). This music bars transfer the cultivated character from formerly cruise ships, which is often lost on new ships. Top-modern equipment completed the positive impression of the "Music Walk". Our favorite was "Billboard onboard", in which a female and a male singer performed chart hits of the last forty years at two pianos. Outstanding! The two main restaurants were really assailed long before opening time. I never watched this behavior of guests on other cruises. The main dining room opens at 5.15 pm, what is very early. Many guests formed a long line before 5.00 pm! At 5.15 pm was no more table for two avaiable. There is no buffet restaurant with selfservice on the Koningsdam! In the market-restaurant "Lido Market" any food is presented at at various booths behind glass covers. You must order everything seperate: Roastbeef, mashed potatoes, bread, salad. Sometimes you must go to another booth or station and stand in line again. This is not a satisfactory substitute for a real buffet restaurant with selfservice. The food is good, however. Especially delicious was the salad which is individually mixed - at a booth for salad. Unfortunately went many guests one hour before opening to the market-restaurant "Lido Market" to reserve window seats. At opening it was often overcrowded. And it was often difficult to find a table. Sometimes we had to sit outside the restaurant at a table in the Pool area. Still we can not imagine, but we saw it with our own eyes: Some People were eating more then two hours in the Lido market restaurant, then they went to the "New York Deli" and ordered a Pizza. Wow, are these people hungry! You can not die of starvation on a cruise ship! You can get all-day water, coffee and tea without additional payment (dispenser on the market restaurant), but also in all other restaurants and in lounges and bars. Three-course menus (four courses at Gala) are served in the main restaurant "The Dining Room" in the evening, which took much too long with up to two hours. Portions are also too small. The main restaurant is inspired by the style of the early 70s: Ugly lamps in spherical shape, uninspired ceiling board. The hypermodern wine tower get lost in the disaster, which is formed by terrible lamp globes. On gala evenings some men wore the tuxedo. Most wore bright and dark suits. And one entered the main restaurant with yellow polo shirt and cargo pants. The entire staff did a fantastic job. The cabin steward, the numerous waiters and the Security staff. Everyone was friendly and helpful, attentive, greeted always and smiled. HAL can be proud for these recruitments. Our cabin was as small as on other ships, but designed thoughtfully. All equipment was from high quality. The bathroom is okay and has a very large glass-enclosed shower. This shower is very pleasant and is setting standards! Air conditioning works excellent and is perfect to adjust. The aircon can be switched off for the night. Many Germans like it, to switch of the aircon at night. The toilet worked with occasional delays. Great is the large flat screen (estimated 40/42 Zoll) with lots of films with no additional charge, also in German. A little faulty construction shows up when you want to go back on board from the shore. Every entrance is equipped with only one x-ray machine for security checks. If only one entrance is open, guests, who want to go back on board, formed ashore long lines. These lines (in cold, rain or blazing sun) are annoying when you want back on board after a day ashore with aching feet. Security staff is working hard and fast, but the ship must provide two or more x-ray machines. In my opinion, this problem is easily to fix. Shore excursions of HAL are overly expensive. We booked three shore excursions. The excursions were well organized.
