We picked this cruise due to the many ports that other ships can't reach. Anchorage, Homer & Kodiak. And a new stop, "Icy Strait Point".
We have sailed on Holland America before, and to Alaska. Were disappointed at the food (either bland or Salty) and lack of entertainment on our prior trip aboard the Rotterdam about 5 years ago.
This cruise, totally different. The food was great, from the Lido to the regular dinning room. We did try the Pennacle, and found it ok. Almost the same as the Main dinning room. That's how good the regular dinning room food was. But did the "Le Cirque" and were really surprised. This is a must.
Noted on first day, crew was busy replacing windows. Some broken ? and there was notable "rust". The glass on half of our window was Glazed. But we understand this is an "Old" ship. Closet was bigger than we're used to. Bathroom was nice, average but then the TUB. Hard to get out of. Even for me (5'8"). My wife (4'10") almost couldn't use it.
Bed mattress could use replacing. Had to get two (2) egg crate covers to fill in the middle. We like sleeping close, but not like that. :)
First few hours on the ship, there were fumes from the fueling tender. We were temporary moved to the other side of the ship till our room was aired out.
We've done this many times before. But always enjoy exploring Pike's market.
We took the shuttle into the village. It is quaint and small. But the shops at the port (cannier) is worth getting off the ship.
We stayed close, but if we go back again (and we'd like to). Would like to see the rest of Homer.
Great beach to walk on. But be warned, they collect all the rocks and shells from you before boarding the ship. ;)
You have to see the WWII Liberty ship. Easy walk to all the museums and Russian Church.
We might move here. (lol) there is so much to see. We lucked out and found the community center and watched a local tribal dance and show.
