Prinsendam Cruise Review by race ave al
- Sail Date: May 2016
- Destination: Mediterranean
- Cabin Type: Vista Suite with Verandah
the public areas are attractive and spotless, but only 4 elevators(fore and aft). this became an issue, due to one most always out of service, otherwise ship easy to navigate, which explains the median age of about 75 yrs old. more for the "young at heart" than young, this is classic 1960 cruising.
other than ping pong and shuffleboard, that's the extent of outside"sports activity". there is a workout area with machines and weights to help fight the calories. we preferred breakfast in the main dinng room on sea days, and found the service excellent. the upstairs lido was rarely crowded, as there were only 650 passengers aboard.
dinner in the main dining room was consistantly very good with few exceptions, and the service was exemplary, a HAL trademark. the few meals we had in the pinnacle steak house kept it's reputation of quality dinning.
while the prinsendam gets only 3 stars as a ship(see above negitives), the 4th star was the"GRAND MED" ports of call. SIMPLY OUTSTANDING!
CAPTAIN TIM kept us informed with daily updates with his wit and humility.
Brett, our port excursion gude, did excellent commentaries on the dardannels and bosphoras(as we could not dis-embark in istanbul,HAL managed a rare cruise of the river).
show lounge entertainment had typical highs and lows, but the adagio(violin and pianist) who played nightly, stole the show if you like classical music.
show band played country western and other music in the lounge.
prinsendam went to drydock after our cruise for lido renovation and engine upgrades. hopefully cabin renovations are to follow, legitellizing the premium price.
a wonderful ship with stellar crew and great fellow passengers.
