7 Day Cruise to Nassau Bahamas from NY aboard NCL GEM - Penthouse Suite 9502

I believe this was the third trip to the Bahamas out of NY for my Wife & I. It wasn't a planned trip either, very last minute decision in fact, which ultimately worked out in our favor. One of our Cruise Buddies that we'd met while taking a cruise to the Caribbean a few years back, had recently won two National awards. No.1 in Nursing for the entire United States and another No.1 from the Military Veterans Hospitals with whom she is also affiliated. Her and her husband had previously booked this cruise, so we decided to cancel the Bermuda cruise that we had scheduled for later in the year, and tag along on this one to celebrate with them. Being last minute, the best we could get was a guaranteed room in the engine room somewhere, but as luck would have it, the Upgrade Fairy called with some available rooms and made me an offer that I couldn't refuse. That's how we ended up in Penthouse Suite 9502.

Our friends had no idea that we would be sailing with them on this trip because we had told them otherwise earlier in the year, so all the fun started right at the VIP lounge in the cruise terminal in NY. When they saw us there, they started jumping up & down, and screaming like they had just hit the lottery or something, it was a great surprise….LOL

Cabin 9502 - Forward Penthouse Suite

I love the forward Penthouses, the sweeping views from these balconies are just fantastic.

I've heard many say that you can't go out and enjoy the balcony when the ship is at sea, but I have never found this to be true. I have always used my balcony when at sea, as do the other passengers in the surrounding cabins. Unless the ship is headed directly into the wind on a blustery day, they're often the calmest decks on the vessel. Yes, there is a required sign posted on the door, but my Butlers have always told me to just ignore it except during heavy weather, in which case common sense applies, and you shouldn't have to be told. On this particular voyage, the ship was headed south, with high winds coming in from the North. Passengers out in public deck areas were being blown off the deck while the forward penthouse decks, shielded from these winds, were calm and quiet.

The Suite itself hasn't changed much over the years, so the decor could, and probably will be, receiving an update soon enough. Still immaculately clean and in full working order of course, just out of date. The coffee maker has been updated to a new look; it's still the same full featured coffee maker, just a new shape. My only pet peeve here on the GEM is the bathrooms. They're really no different from the bathrooms found in the Mini-Suites, identical in fact. Basic Family Suites on similar ships like the Dawn and the Star have much nicer facilities like His & Her sinks, separate bath and showers, more floor area, etc. Shelf and Closet space is a bit limited as well for a Penthouse, but adequate enough for most.

Nassau

Planned to get a Day Pass at one of the area Resorts like Sandals or The Breezes, to take advantage of their amenities, but the weather wasn't the best, so we ended up down town.
