Embarkation was excellent, we arrived at 12 and there was no waiting. We went straight to the Windjammer which was very good especially as it was the first day. Our cabin was ready at 3pm. The ship had apparently been in dock for some sort of upgrade, all I can say is that our cabin and other areas around the ship were looking old. I was very disappointed to see thick dust on the drawer rims but other than that it appeared to be clean.
The entertainment and activities were ok. The guitarist, and the other 3 bands were excellent.
The dining room was a real disappointment. For the first time in any cruise we chose to go to the Windjammer for breakfast and lunch as it was better than the dining room. The service both at breakfast and lunch was awful. Evening dining wasn't great either, it wasn't the fault of the waiting staff. The food wasn't good, was unimaginative and we often found that we had trouble in finding something we wanted to eat. On one occasion there was cherry dessert but they had run out of the cherries that was normally used for the dessert so used glace cherries which was disgusting. The desserts in the Windjammer were mainly gelatine and far too sweet.
Balcony cabin. Grooves in the drawers were the handles and they were thick with dust (not just a weeks worth) Room is tired and needs updating. Bathroom drains were a bit smelly so as long as you kept the plug in the sink it was ok. Bed is next to the balcony. Room had plenty of storage space and was a good position on the ship. No longer get chocolates on the pillow (not that we needed them).
Got on a hop on hop off bus only cost 10 euros it was great
Decided that the ships shuttle bus was expensive so walked to the Cathedral it took us about an hour but it was worth it. We caught a local bus back for 4 euros much cheaper than the ships shuttle
Arrived the day before and stayed in a B & B in Civitavecchia. A short 5 min walk to port
