A Wonderful 7 Night Addition to a Miami to Athens Cruise

Riviera Cruise Review by cruisercn

Trip Details
  • Sail Date: May 2016
  • Destination: the Western Mediterranean

This cruise was an extension offer from Oceania. We added it to a Miami to Athens booking and received credits on airfare not needed for a back-to-back cruise. This also gave us an opportunity to do a day tour in Greece during the embarkation day, as we were already on the ship.

Dining venues on the Riviera include 4 specialty restaurants, the Grand Dining Room, Waves, and the Terrace Cafe. One reservation at no adittional cost is granted for each specialty restaurant; our favorite is Red Ginger. The food is excellent as is the service in all venues. Dress for dinner is business casual; formal and dressy attire are optional for those wanting it.

The cabins on the Riviera are fairly spacious, with comfortable beds and clothing storage rasonably adequate for a month's stay on board. Cleaning staff are friendly and thorough, with service twice a day plus bed turn-down in the evening.

Entertainment on this cruise was excellent, with very good performers. A string quartet played daily, including at high tea at 4:00 pm, and a pianist played regularly in the Martini's lounge and other venues. However, one needs to decide daily what activities to do from an array of options--enrichment lectures, reading in the library, bingo an other games, the casino, the lounges, special shipboard events and moe.

The ports visited on this cruise were great! Both Corfu and Katakolon were particlularly special, and Santorini with the ancient site of Akrotiri was a treat. Shore excursions offered by Oceania range in price based upon level of luxury and services rendered, Lowest cost are bus tours with a guide for sight seeing, sometimes including narration through an archaeological or historical area (e.g., Akritiri). Boat rides, private tours with fewer people and specialty on-shore events are typically available at rather higher cost. Cruise Critic members who spend the time and effort to research alternatives through Roll Call and travel web sites can successfully hire or join excellent private tours at potentially lower per-person costs; however, Oceania shore excursions do guarantee getting back to the ship on time and give refunds if a port cannot be visited due to unforeseen events or sea conditions.

Oceania is our favorite. Our next cruise with them puts us at the Silver Level in the Oceania Club, and we have seen and met people who traveled on past cruises, and on this one.
