Sail Date: Apr 2016

We read the publicity for Fathom cruises and booked their inaugural cruise to Puerto Plata because we loved the concept. Two weeks later they were the first ship to sail to Havana since the 1960s.

I think the jury may be out on the effectiveness of their plan to use vacationers to bring assistance to developing communities in Dominica and Cuba, but I certainly applaud the idea and their efforts. As for the ship, the Adonia is a beautiful older ship and we certainly enjoyed the ambiance. The crew was great, and unlike on other ships, they are encouraged to mingle with the passengers when they are off duty, and many of them are required to take part in the impact activities. The dining service was great and most of the food was pretty good, although I'd avoid the fish until they get a better supplier since every piece we had was old and fishy and the last night I got food poisoning from it.

The activities are interesting, although I thought the time spent on them was a little short. If you do book, you must absolutely book your activities well ahead of time, some of them book up and the best are simply unavailable if you wait until close to sailing to book them. The cacao factory and the recycling project are easy and fun and you can book those as often as you like. The reforestation and village construction projects require long pants and real shoes, which they neglect to tell you until you are on the ship (maybe they figured that out since the first week). The language programs were well received by the guests who did them.
