The Sun Princess basically should be scrapped. It is well past its use by date even after a two week $30 Million refit. The only two things that it had going for it were it's general staff, whom were fantastic all of them and the food which was very very good.
Day before embarkation we were told Kuala Lumpur had been removed from trip itinerary due to a generator problems causing reduced speed and that each of us would be offered a $100 on board credit as compensation WOW!!!!
Embarkation was slow but not tiresome. We had balcony stateroom on Baja Deck 10, they were small but ok. Cabin steward was great as were all of the general crew everywhere.
The swimming pools were all out of use first day due to water quality issues. Our shower in the cabin was one day scolding next day cold for the whole trip. Our toilet blocked regularly and was out for a whole day once even after having reporting it so three times.
People were regularly getting trapped in the lifts the whole trip. The laundry flooded leaving the passageway soaking and smelly. The laundry token machine did not work.
Dining room was great, great food, great staff. Entertainment was hit and miss but overall acceptable. The gym was good with good serviceable equipment. Kids club was fantastic, the best i have seen, well done!
Ship excursions mmmmmm. Before we got on two of our reserved excursions got cancelled because they were undergoing maintenance. Pity we weren't told that when we reserved them. The phi phi island tour in Phuket was looking good. We readied ourselves having received notification in our stateroom, went to the meeting point, put on our stickers and waited to be taken off the ship. The the excursions officer approached us and said we cant go on the tour as our son was to young (11) and we had a minute to make up our minds for a change!!!!!. She was arrogant, rude and needs demoting to bilge cleaner where she would be best suited. That left one tour, which we went on and enjoyed, even though a little expensive as with most ship tours. They even tried to charge us for the Phi Phi island tour on our on board account!
We were at sea for Anzac day and the service was absolutely beautiful and heartfelt until the cruise director got half way through the lords prayer and forgot the words!
Sun Princess bobs around like a cork in the deep ocean swells and last three days down the West Australian coast saw most confined to quarters with sea sickness.
Overall assessment.......I am an ex navy man 55 yrs old, not old and grumpy and wingy. I call it the way it it is, the truth. My overall assessment would be to avoid the Sun Princess if you don't want any of the above issues and if you suffer from sea sickness in any form. The general staff and food were fantastic and the ship itself was always clean and tidy although she did seem to have a "crowding" issue also. That is the inability to escape crowds in public areas throughout the ship which i have never experienced before.
I expected so much more, having been told Princess were the best, that was not our experience sadly.
