We needed a winter getaway and love the flexibility of driving to NY so we chose the GEM with her Florida/Bahamas itinerary as our winter escape. Embarkation: We have done 2 other trips out of NYC, once on the Dawn and once on the Spirit we were prepared for the chaotic check in that we had previously experienced and was delighted to find the check in lines almost non existent ( we arrived around 11:15 am) after checking in we were directed to the waiting area and was told that we should begin boarding at around 12:15. Boarding was right on time and we were greeted with very enthusiastic welcomes and was offered champagne. Our first stop was to go have some lunch so we headed to the main dining room and had our first of many great meals. Rating 10 Cabin: We were in a BB Cabin and found the size to be perfect for 2. Having the nice floor to ceiling glass made the room feel larger. The closet, drawers and storage shelves were plenty adequate to unpack all our outfits with room to spare. The bathrooms are nice as they are separated with glass doors so one can shower and the other can still use the sink or toilet area. The upgraded bedding as part of 2.0 was a 5 star experience, we both slept in almost every morning and found the bed itself to be more comfy than home. Our stewards kept our room spotless and 4 of the seven nights we had the traditional towel animals to greet us. We did get 4 cookies one night which I think was part of the Gold latitudes perks. Rating 10 Food: We most often ate our meals in the Main Dining Room or Magenta, we found the the service in Magenta was a bit quicker and not quite as noisy. The only meal that I would say was not good was a meal advertised as "carved turkey" I think this was actually a turkey roll type of turkey and did not enjoy it. We ate in La Cucina one night and found it to be very dark ( we had to use a flashlight to see the menu and the food) when we asked about the lighting they said that this was the way it was. 3 out of 4 of us did not like our meals and the host appropriately sat with us and wrote down our suggestions/concerns and waived the surcharge. One suggestion for breakfast is to ask your server for a pot of coffee to be left on the table, we found the cups to be on the tiny side and it took quite a while before the servers came back to fill the cups. Overall out of 21 meals to not like only 2 of them was pretty good. Rating 9 Entertainment: We saw 1 productions show with a 70's theme, the singers and dancers were energetic and looked like they were having fun. The comedian/magician was good and entertaining. The lounges all had live music with good variety. Rating - 10 Casino: The casino is large and busy most of the time. Because the chairs are not stationary it sometimes became a problem to navigate around the casino without having to walk around or pushing in chairs. All the usual slot variety's were available ranging from 2 cent slots to high limit slots. DH thought the table game limits were too high $10.00 for craps kept the table closed almost all day and found it only available after 7 pm. Rating 7

Port & Shore Excursion Reviews

  • Freeport
We arrived in Freeport at 7 am so we got up early and planned a taxi ride into Port Lucaya for some shopping. We were dropped off at 8:30 and found only 1 store open so in the pouring rain we just stood around and wondered why the other stores did not open early knowing that the ship was only here until 11:30. We briefly checked out the casino ( which did not open until 10 am) and headed back to the ship. Checked out the straw market near the ship and gave up when it started to rain again. Not enough time at this stop to really get to see anything.

  • Nassau
We arrived in Nassau around 9 am and had the full day plus half the night ( midnight departure) we opted for a private taxi tour @ $30.00 per person which took us pretty much on the same path as the ship offered excursion @ 47.00 per person. We shopped downtown and headed for cover when more rain started. Enjoyed a pleasant drink and nacho's at the Hard Rock Cafe and then headed over to Atlantis to check out the dig and the casino.

  • Port Canaveral (Orlando)
This being our second time with this same itinerary we did not plan any excursions but instead decided to rent a car ( Budget $45.00) and drove up to Orlando for some premium outlet shopping. The weather was beautiful and sunny and the outlets are open air so were able to enjoy the Florida sunshine! We would have loved to do one of the major parks but really felt the time in port was insufficient to justify the expense of admission for about 4 hours of park time.
