  3. Norwegian Epic
This cruise was to celebrate my 60th and my husband's 70th and our friends were travelling with us. It was booked as soon as it became available (20 months in advance)! We thought we were doing the right thing but we won't make that mistake again!! It was booked for the itinerary as I have always wanted to visit Italy but we both had concerns about the Epic, re the size of the ship and all the negative criticisms oink general and on this site!! We booked balcony cabins. We then cancelled and re-booked 6 months later, losing our deposit, but gaining a reduced price, the ultimate dining and beverage packages as well as receiving an upgrade on our cabins. We also received another upgrade to mini-suites just prior to travelling. Well the cruise was an Epic Success! The sun shone us and the sea was calm for the whole of the cruise. From getting out of the taxi at the port in Barcelona to getting into a taxi at the port at the end of the cruise we had all had a fabulous time! We sailed through check-in! An hour after the taxi dropping us off, we had left our hand luggage in our cabin and were enjoying a drink in the bar to celebrate the start of our adventure! We couldn't fault the service we received from our steward, the waiters, the bar staff or any of the Norwegian crew. We were thoroughly pampered and looked after, the staff just couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. We ate in all the speciality dining rooms, some more than once, and they were all were excellent. We dined in the Manhattan one evening and at The Cirque Dreams another and both were great. We breakfasted every morning at Taste, where again we received superb service and lovely food. As you've probably gathered by now the self-service restaurants were not for us! When we did use them, the food all looked good and what we ate was excellent but it was all like a bit of a bun fight! The Lavazza coffee shop was good too but needs more seating. Entertainment was all brilliant, so professional and entertaining, couldn't fault any of it. We saw Priscilla, Burn the Floor, the Bee Gees and Men of Motown. Re the ship........The only real wow-factor for us, was when we walked into our cabin the first time, it was fab, plenty of storage, comfy bed, nice sized balcony. We had no problems at all with the bathroom arrangements. Loved the large shower area. Really missed an Atrium! Sadly on the Epic the Atrium is an epic disaster as it doesn't really exist! The Casino is far far too large, what a waste of space! Indoor area which really could have been put to better use, as in more seating for social/bar/coffee areas which I would imagine could be a real problem with an inclement weather cruise. Lack of outdoor decks was strange too, they're occupied by lifeboats on the Epic! Only place we visited where service was slow and food mediocre was O'sheenan's. One visit was more than enough. Thoroughly enjoyed our cruise, but our next will, I'm sure, be on a smaller more conventional ship. And will be with Norwegian as we love the free-style approach. Loved the itinerary but then that was why we chose this cruise. Didn't use Norwegian for our shore excursions, they're far too expensive. We did our own thing In Sardinia and Scicilly. Not a great lot to see in Cagliari but we enjoyed walking round the city and the port. Scicily blew us away beautiful city which we toured in a tuc-tuc. We used Can't be Missed Tours for our trip from Naples, visiting Pompei, Sorento and Positano. Great value for money and very interesting and informative tour guide. We got the shuttle bus, local bus and train into Rome, very doable and very easy. Enabled us to see and do exactly what we wanted to. In Livorno we went with Tuscany Bus Tours, incredible value at 38€ each, they took us to Florence and Pisa. Great guide Chiara who was brilliant throughout. Really couldn't fault them.

An Epic Success!

Cabin Review

Mini-Suite with Balcony
Cabin MD 8179
Superb! Spotlessly clean, so much storage. Comfy bed. Great balcony, really can't see what the fuss is all about over the lifeboats unless you want to hang over the rail to look at the sea! No problems either regarding the bathroom arrangement. We had a very large shower, which suited us. Our friends, next door, a bath which they preferred. Steward was fantastic, went out of his way to be friendly, helpful and made us feel that nothing was too much trouble.
