As a celebration of our 35th Wedding Anniversary, our 5th year ‘Cruise Anniversary’ & our 10th RCI cruise we booked the Explorer OTS 13N Sth Pacific & Nth Island NZ Mar-30 2016 for just DW and myself. This was the first ‘just-the-two-of-us’ for a few cruises. This was our 1st Explorer cruise, but we had done 2 previously on Voyager, so the layout of the ship was very familiar & we have previously cruised on Rhapsody & Radiance, and last year we sailed Carnival Spirit to Melbourne Cup. Originally we had booked an IC on Deck 6, but the opportunity presented itself for a paid upgrade to OV, which I did as a surprise for DW, being a special occasion & all, & the surprise remained all the way until we were in the cabin. We had 2246, so very low down & very forward. This location proved excellent for us, both in proximity to many entertainment venues (just a few flights up) & also the good exercise opportunity afforded to get to the food venues!!! In fact, despite again indulging somewhat in the never ending offerings of food on-board, our routine was such that we returned home at the same 'riding weight' as pre-cruise :-) Check-in was a breeze and the check-in agent Graham was once again great. Suddenly we were on-board and having our boarding photo taken & then lunch in Windjammer. The staff on board were really very good & everything was shipshape, much as our previous experiences were. Our cabin steward Chris was very friendly & efficient – excellent! Our waiter Joselito & assistant waiter Edgar in MTD were excellent and looked after us so well - service and food was great. The whole MTD experience was excellent and we ate there every night. Food in WJ, where we mostly has breakfast & lunch was very good and the staff excellent. Also enjoyed the offerings from the Promenade Café. Some Trivia activities suffered from overcrowding in the Schooner Bar & the Star Lounge is a much better venue for Trivia. The events themselves were well run – we particularly enjoyed Andre from Jamaica’s Progressive Trivia on sea days. This was our 1st ‘real’ cruise as Diamond C&A members, as the previous cruise was just 3N and with a big group, we weren’t able to utilise many of the benefits. We frequented the lounge most evenings for a drink or two before the show (the waiters were excellent), and a few daytime visits to get a nice cup of coffee. We also did get a few free drinks during the lounge hours at other venues. We enjoyed the backstage tour that was arranged. A nice perk for us. We loved the shows, including the ice show, which was again spectacular – overall the entertainment was really good. Once again I find myself saying “Can't wait until we next board an RCI ship”.

Cabin Review

Cabin 2246
Cabin was perfectly adequate for our needs - clean and tidy & well serviced. We don't spend much time in our cabin, but we were happy. Little or no passing traffic as we were so far forward.
