We chose this cruise as the dates fitted well onto the end of a holiday in the USA. We have cruised about seven times before but never on Holland America. The Maasdam is an older ship but to us seemed well maintained and we liked the public rooms.
Embarkation went smoothly, our luggage arrived fairly quickly and we were happy enough with our cabin (deck 9 spa verandah suite).
The crew were good and did their jobs well, especially our cabin steward who kept everything spotless.
We opted for a 'guaranteed' verandah cabin and got an upgrade to a spa verandah (2 yoga mats, some power drinks and a discount on a spa treatment). Watch out as the 'menu' in the Greenhouse Spa is complicated and many treatments are not included in this deal. They try to sell you extra products too. Our cabin was in a good position on the ship, fairly close to elevators. There was ample storage and cases could fit under the bed. The cabin was a reasonable size with a sofa area but not much space between the end of the bed and the wall. The bathroom was clean but dated and had a bath with shower arrangement which might be tricky for the elderly or infirm. On the verandah are two rattan style armchairs, a footstool and a very small table. The doors open out onto the verandah.
Our guide was interesting and amusing. We particularly enjoyed Nelson's dockyard.
