This was our first cruise and we chose to take a Viking River Cruise down the Rhine River. We chose a pre-cruise extension and made all of the arrangements on our own, spending two nights in Amsterdam before boarding the Viking ship Hlin.

Our first impressions with the ship and crew were...Wow!! The ship was amazing and the crew friendly and helpful no matter what we asked or requested. Our stateroom steward made us feel as though we were her only customers! The rest of the staff was just as wonderful and at the welcome dinner we were informed that the water levels were good and we should have no problems with our cruise to Basel.

The atmosphere onboard is casual and we saw everything from t-shirts to jacket and ties, and the ages ranged from early/mid 30's to early 80's.

Cologne

A wonderful guide who was very knowledgeable. Viking seems to use local folks as their tour guides and most seem to have an interest in history.

Koblenz

It was an included excursion. A good tour.

Heidelberg

A superb tour guide. We were able to see about 60-70% of the castle. The rest of the time we spent walking around the city and grabbing a quick meal at on of the cafes.

Strasbourg

We took an included walking tour after a 40 minute bus ride into town. We felt as though we could have spent a little more time in the city. Across the river where the ship tied up was the German town of Kehl, we took a walk on our own there.

Amsterdam

We did our own extension in Amsterdam and made our own arrangements. We stayed at the Notting Hill Hotel which was a small boutique hotel. It was just across form a canal cab stop, tram stop, and two blocks from the outdoor market. I would stay there again!
