Our first cruise on the new Viking Sea came just over 35 years after our first-ever cruise on the Royal Viking Sea. How times have changed! The Viking Sea, accommodating just over 900 passengers, is a delight on which to cruise. The public spaces are light, airy, and welcoming, displaying the classic crisp and understated design Norwegians (and all Scandanavians) are known for. Add to that excellent food and a very gracious and attentive staff, and our cruise felt like staying in the Four Seasons Istanbul Sultanahmet (which we did). The Viking Sea's talented entertainers and its culture enhancement offerings rounded out a very special cruise.

Of special note, the Viking Sea sails under the Norwegian flag. Its port of registry? Bergen, Norway - a major plus.

Port calls included Zadar, Croatia (special excursion to a prosciutto-maker's farm), Dubrovnik, Athens (be prepared for the effects of the continuing austerity), and Ephesus before making a very special Santorini port call. Due to heightened security concerns in Istanbul, Viking very wisely substituted Santorini for a second night in Istanbul. We were delighted they did. We sailed into the Santorini "port" at sunrise, side-by-side with the Viking Sea's year-older sister ship, Viking Star. Enough said, as they say!

Cabin Review

A very comfortable cabin (midship deck 5) with all the necessary creature comforts including a heated bathroom floor and large class enclosed shower. Viking Ocean's website does not embellish - what you see, we got. Sitting on our Veranda at dawn was mesmerizing.
