We went with our children to Hawaii. Cruising was the best option to see all the islands. What a lovely time we had! Staff was very friendly and accommodating. Food was perfect as well. We were a bit skeptical when we read the negative reviews, but once on the ship, we realized that staff was there to look after you with any request and would take your feedback very seriously. They really made you feel like you are part of their family for a week. I remember telling a director about being very cold on the ship and next day, temperature was adjusted to a comfortable level. There was food available 24 hours in one of the restaurants. We especially loved their freestyle dining as we didn’t have to rush to the dining room at a certain time. We never felt it was crowded in any restaurants that we went to.

The only concern we have is the lack of flexibility in Norwegian service charge policy. They shouldn't charge full service charges for children.

We didn’t book any cruise excursions but rented a car on all the ports except in Kona as there are public buses that take you around for minimal rate.

Port Reviews

Kauai

This was our favorite island of all. Loved it. we rented a car for two days. Car company shuttle comes to the port to pick you up to take you to car rental agency. You can park a car near port for 10-15 dollars for a night so you can enjoy both days to the fullest. We read the book "Kauai Revealed" and just followed all the suggestions.

First day we drove all the way to Tunnel beach. Absolutely worth the drive. It is a Snorkeling Nirvana. We have snorkeled in all different places in the world, but this by far the best "aquarium at your feet". Once again Make sure you have water shoes(lots of rocks) and snorkeling gears so you don't have to spend money on renting them at every port. This would be the best investment you would make. if you want to wonder the island on your own and save money.

Next day we drove to Waimea Canyon. beautiful drive and scenery.

Kona (Kailua Bay)

In Kona, we used tender to come to the port. Process was easy. Once on the port there are private buses/taxis who would run and ask for your business. Kona is a small town. local buses(Kona Trolley) are right there and you can go around at minimal charges. We went snorkeling at the kahallu beach park.Lots of fish and even saw a turtle. marine guides are there in water with you to explain all different marine life. Make sure you have water shoes(lots of rocks) and snorkeling gears so you don't have to spend money on renting them at every port.

Hilo

Rented a car and went to see Volcano. You don't see much of volcano but a big crater and fumes coming out of it. We had rented a car with GPS. GPS would give you a running commentary when we would pass any tourist attractions. That was wonderful like having a private guide.

Maui

We took a cab for Road to Hana as we didn't want to drive such winding roads. We thought it was not worth the money and time we spent in the car. Weather was very damp and rainy. Treacherous roads makes you feel very uncomfortable. We wanted to do it as everyone has been talking about it. I wish we had done something else instead.

Next day we rented a car and went to Wailea Beach. On every Island we would follow the book "Revealed". The best thing to do is buy water shoes and snorkeling gears before you cruise as every port of call except Hilo have snorkeling opportunities.
