Sail Date: Feb 2009

My DH and I are in our 50s (OK he's 60) and we have been on 10 cruises. We have sailed with Regent twice and Silversea once as well as Princess once, Celebrity once, Disney once and Royal Caribbean 4 times. We do not expect Regent service for RCL prices. Royal Caribbean in our opinion delivers a great product for the price. We flew Cathay Pacific biz class to Singapore from LAX via Hong Kong and it was great. Because of the lie flat seats we were able to "hit the ground running" when we arrived in Singapore. Altho it was extremely hot and humid, we did manage a walk on Orchard Rd and then we went to the Night Safari. That was a great experience, Highly recommend it. We were treated to some shamelessly romantic porcupines among other nocturnal animal doings! Priceless. We stayed at the Four Seasons which was as expected very nice. They arranged a car and driver to tour the city of Singapore the next day. After a fantastic breakfast buffet at the hotel, we went to the Orchid Gardens, had a singapore sling at Raffles and later took a ride on the Singapore Flyer which is giant Ferris Wheel much like the London Eye. The driver took us to the Muslim section of town where we had a fantastic lunch. Don't know the name of the place but it is right across the street from the Mosque and there is a guy in the window making flatbread. After that we headed to the ship.

Now the ship's departure was scheduled for 7 pm so we thought at 5:00 we were in plenty of time. Wrong! In fact the photographers had already rolled up the embarkation photo! We had to fill out all kinds of paper with regard to the Visas that the ship was to secure for us and once that was done we rushed on board. We met up later with some folks we met on our roll call who said for them it was the worst embarkation ever, very disorganized and time consuming, long lines etc. So our misunderstanding about the time to embark apparently worked in our favor except for me not getting my usual photo. Legend is actually in our view in pretty good shape for her age. Everything was clean and well kept. Overall we thought the food was pretty mediocre in both the MDR and the Windjammer. But, again, we don't expect a lot for the $. Seats in the Windjammer were sometimes hard to come by. The pizza was dreadful but our friends loved the hot dogs and burgers at the pool grill. This was a member cruise so we received a number of gifts periodically. We got a magnet, hats, document holders at the M&M, voltage adapters, night lights...Pretty nice we thought. We went to just a few shows. Thought the production show was pretty poor but loved the acrobats Crazy Horse (the ship was really rolling that night but they went on anyway) and the Abba tribute band Bjorn Again was terrific. Our cruise overnighted in Bangkok so we booked the Mandarin Oriental and stayed overnight off the ship. In addition to the other couple we travel with (we met on a cruise in the Med in 2003) we had three other people we met on our roll call (recommend that as well, loved them and really enjoyed their company)and we all spent the two days with Bangkok Day Tours who were terrific. We went to the Tiger Temple and the floating market. We went to the dinner show of traditional Thai dancing at the Oriental which was a beautiful hotel right on the river. Our room was upgraded to a river view and it was like watching the electric parade out the window, all the elaborate boats all lit up, Fantastic! The next port was Sihanoukville. I would not ever go here again. Very aggressive beggars everywhere especially children at the Temples. We went to the beach and could not stop for a second without being mobbed by ladies insisting on giving us massages or manicures. Not fun. Our friends went to Phnom Phen with the ship's excursion and said they are glad they went but would not do it again because of the appalling poverty along the road on the way to the city. In Ho Chi Minh City we went on a rickshaw ride through the city traffic. Not for the faint-hearted but a total blast! We had two other ports in Vietnam which were interesting. In Nha Trang we climbed to the top of a pagoda and then had a coconut drink at the beach. In Danang we elected to take the ship tour to Hoi An. We saw lots of rice paddies and water buffalo. A very pretty country. Sanya was our first port in China. We went to Monkey Island which was a hoot. 2500+ monkeys running around. The cable car ride back from there was pretty cool too. Our next port was Hong Kong where we had been before so we did it on our own the first day. Dim Sum at the Peninsula hotel and some shopping. The ship overnighted but since the terminal is right in the City no need for a hotel. The next day we took the ship's tour to Lantau Island to see the Giant Buddha. We took the Star Ferry from Kowloon where the ship is docked to Hong Kong Island and then another ferry to Lantau Island where we got on a bus. On the way back we took a cable car. Very nice day I recommend it if you have already seen the fantastic sights of Hong Kong itself. Xiaman was an OK port. Maybe we were just getting tired of pagodas by this time but we found it a bit anticlimactic after Hong Kong. Our last port was Shanghai but we were heading straight to the airport. We have been to Shanghai before so we were OK with that. Unfortunately one of my suitcases failed to exit the ship and I had to come home without it. Last I heard it has been found but who knows when I will get it from China? In sum: great trip , would do it again in a minute.
