Excellent Service on a Tired Old Sun Princess

  • Sail Date: Mar 2016
  • Destination: Asia
  • Cabin Type: Interior

We also have just returned from a 14 night Cruise on Sun Princess from Singapore to Fremantle, stopping in Vietnam,Cambodia,Thailand and Bali.

Embarkation and disembarkation was super smooth and fast.

Staff:

Staff and crew were generally very warm and welcoming and the service was excellent from the cabin steward, to the bar staff to the waiters etc etc. Fitness director needs some serious improvement in his interpersonal-relationship skills.

Excursions:

We generally do not take the cruise organised excursions as we find that we can usually do very similar excursions with more flexibility of schedule for less than half the price.

Dining:

Yes I know that we have the hand-washing 'gestapo' at the entrance, but we have got to recognise that it is for our own health, safety and well-being. We appreciated that, thank you.

The food choices at the Horizon were very varied and plentiful and usually of a good quality. We ate there for breakfast and lunch.

We had dinner at the Regency dining room most nights. Lovely dining room and excellent waiters, especially Maynard who was a warm and knowledgeable consummate professional. We found Maynard to be one of the best dining room staff we we have encountered on all our journeys. Having sailed around the Mediterranean on the Regal Princess a year ago, sadly, the menu selection here over the 14 days lacked variety and flair and all in all was pretty ordinary compared to what we experienced in the Med. Not once did the 'aloof' head waiters come around to ask how things were going.

Entertainment:

Generally pretty good with good variety.

Onboard:

The Sun Princess is an old and tired looking boat which is going in for re-furbishment - and none too soon. The cabins and passageways are rather shabby. However, my mattress was changed within an hour of me requesting such.

At a Q&A session on the Regal in answer to the question "What do you do with your old boats", the Cruise Director's response, in the presence of the Captain, was "We use them on our Australian routes". Sadly, this boat in its current state attests to that comment.

All in all, a very, very tired boat with excellent staff.
