I am writing this review to let everyone know about the incredible experience that is the MSC Yacht Club. My husband and I are experienced cruisers with probably 30 cruises or more, many of them in suites. Lately we have been enjoying NCL's The Haven, but we have also cruised in suites on HAL, Princess, Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and Uniworld.

We flew into Miami a day ahead of the cruise and spent the night at the Epic hotel as we wanted to eat at Zuma - which proved to be as great as their reputation! Wow! If you like sushi and sashimi, I highly recommend you try this restaurant - but you must have reservations as they are full on weekends.

The next morning we took a taxi to the ship. As soon as the porter knew we were yacht club, we were immediately walked to the yacht club entrance and from there, we were swiftly escorted to the VIP lounge for champagne and cookies. Once checked in, we were personally escorted to our suite by one of the butlers.

Cabin Review

Yacht Club Deluxe Suite

Cabin YC1

Our suite: Y1: Yacht Club Deluxe Suite 15030

This is one of the 4 larger Penthouse style suites on deck 15. It has a large walk-in closet with safe, marble bathroom with tub/shower combination and large bedroom area with a comfortable sofa, chair, and table, writing desk/makeup area and a large balcony with 2 chairs and an ottoman. We found it to be an ideal size for 2.

The negatives:

1. The worst thing about this suite (which honestly is not all that bad) was that there was no separate tub and shower, but a tub shower combination in a configuration that reminded me of the Golden Princess mini-suite's bathroom. While I'm certain this is luxurious by European standards, by American standards, this bathroom is just too small for a suite. I think it is hard for Europeans to realize how much larger American bathrooms are so I would suggest MSC look at the suite bathrooms on NCL's newest ships (Getaway, Breakaway, Escape) to get an idea of what normal expectations are for a suite bathroom. My husband and I also noticed that the bottom of the bathtub is quite slippery. In future ship designs, I suggest that MSC increase the size of the bathroom for all suites and add a large, walk-in shower with sliding glass doors instead of the single half wall of glass towards the shower part of the tub (hard for my husband to use without getting water all over the bathroom) or alternatively, remove the tub and just make the space a walk in shower with sliding glass doors. In addition, the suite bathroom should always include 2 sinks and more storage for passenger's items. The fixtures were luxurious and high quality. Honestly, I hate to complain about the suite bathroom at all because all the other amenities were so great, however, to be fair to all other cruise lines, the bathroom design is where MSC is the most lacking in suite accommodations. One puzzling thing about the bathroom. There was an ashtray installed on the wall next to the toilet on a ship that is almost completely non-smoking except for the cigar lounge and somewhere out on deck that I never ran across. Yes, that's right - there is NO SMOKING in the casino either!

2. Underpowered hair dryer, very slow to dry my hair, which usually I can dry it in under 10 minutes, but here, 20 minutes was the norm.

3. The beds were not joined with a foam insert to smooth the gap, so we tended to roll into the crack between the beds while sleeping.

4. Not enough plugs for technology. There were 2 110 volt plugs located on the desk/makeup area. We had with us 2 computers, 2 iPads and 2 cellphones, and 1 digital camera so having some USB plugs by the bedside table would have been appreciated.

5. Slamming door - I think maybe it was on 14? But we could hear a door slamming often starting around 7am - 9am. I suspect it was a door to a crew area. Perhaps something could be done to make this door more quiet. Other than that our cabin was very quiet.

The positives:

The positives far outweigh the negatives, IMO. The room is large and beautifully decorated in appealing shades of brown, taupe and cream with a touch of red in the marble in the bathroom. The bed is comfortable, neither too hard nor too soft. The sofa is very comfortable (hard to find in a sleeper sofa). The blackout drapes actually blackout - which is not the norm on most ships. There is a nice flatscreen TV. Mirrors are effectively placed to make the room look larger. The balcony is wide. The sliding glass door was nice. There was a mini bar with all complimentary items including bottled still and sparkling water, soda pop and alcohol. MSC provided shampoo, conditioner, bath gel and lotion in individual bottles in the bathroom. The ONLY touch missing from our other cruises in suites was a fresh flower arrangement.

Port Reviews

San Juan

I decided we would walk around old San Juan, stopping for breakfast at Caficultura and then walk to the Cathedral of San Juan Bautista where Ponce de Leon is entombed. The breakfast and cappuccino at Caficultura was wonderful - my husband loved the french toast with pineapple and toasted coconut. We walked from there to the cathedral. When I surprised my husband by showing him the tomb of Ponce de Leon, it became immediately apparent he had no clue whatsoever who that was or why I was showing him the tomb. LOL! So, instead I showed him the incorruptible relic (St. Pious, one of the first Martyrs of the Roman Persecutions, killed for his faith. 11 Popes have taken his name and this relic was given to San Juan by the pope in 1815 and sent to Spain for restoration, then shipped to San Juan in 1862) in the glass coffin next to Ponce de Leon's tomb.

Nassau

We've been to Nassau so many times that we just got off the ship for a brief walk around town. Getting out of the port area has become such a hassle with so many vendors trying to make a living it really is quite annoying having to dodge all these people. We walked through the straw market briefly, so I could buy a golf cap for my dad and then walked through the usual shops on the way back to the ship for lunch.

St. Thomas

We have been to St. Thomas many times before and had scheduled to sail on a yacht to St. John. Unfortunately something weird happened. We had asked to concierge what was the earliest we could get off the ship and were told 9:30am. So at 9:20, we went to the concierge who called down to make sure the door was open and we were escorted down by our butler and went directly to a taxi. As far as I could tell we were # 5 and 6 getting off the ship - there was no one else there at the time. Within 3 minutes my cellphone rang and the captain of the sailboat told me the other couple from our ship was already at the boat (20 minutes away) and they needed to leave. So we got left behind. Luckily I had not paid in advance for this excursion. I'll never really know what happened as I asked the concierge if we could have gotten off earlier and she said we were among first off the ship. Very strange. So we re-boarded the ship and of course, the concierge and butler were very concerned to see us. But, we just relaxed a while and went to lunch and as we sat in Le Muse noticed several people looking over the stern of the ship. After lunch we walked out there and observed a $2.5 Million dollar yacht on fire! We sat out on our balcony and observed the fire department trying to put the fire out over the course of 6 hours. Even as we pulled away from St. Thomas, with the yacht burned down to the waterline, it was still on fire!

Miami

We did not do much here this time, but did eat at Zuma in The Epic Hotel, both of which I highly recommend. Outside was a yacht named IDOL which belongs to one of the judges of American Idol. Can you guess who?
