First, to put this review into context, everything I say after this will be nitpicking. It was a great cruise, friendly people, easy on/off, crowds weren't a problem, good time had by all. Here's my complaints: Norwegian has an app called iConcierge, which is supposed to allow you to book events and communicate with others on the ship's wifi. It's not quite ready for prime time - didn't work much of the time. The touchscreens on the ship are painfully slow and hard to work. I didn't like paying for some of the entertainment like Illusions and Wine Lovers -the Musical. Most ships have a show every night where all attend. Wasn't that way on the Getaway, probably due to the numbers onboard.
Gift shop selection was limited - one of our travel mates forgot a pair of shorts and there's just nothing to choose from in there. If they put half as much effort into stocking the gift shop with something besides liquor, jewelry and watches I'd have been happier. Ocho Rios doesn't have much to offer, and the excursions in general are overpriced. The savvy cruiser can usually do better on their own. Most cruises that I've been on seemed to have more smaller daily "events" like trivia, etc. Finally, and this is just me - why can't Norwegian learn how to host and run a proper poker tournament. Hold 'em is my generation's "bingo" and with a little bit of effort they could really do something special.
Tips for the Getaway: book dinner reservations early in the cruise, book the better seats on the Illusionarium so you're not trying to see the show through a parade of servers, go see the comedy club events -they're free and good, stay onboard in Ocho Rios, thermal spa rocks and is worth the cost, Ocean Blue was our best specialty dining experience, get the iConcierge app and use it if you can.
Fine - inside poses no problems and didn't miss the porthole.
Great experience.
Walked around onshore - it was fine.
Nice guide and all, just not much meat on the bone.
