We've been on maybe 15 cruises on several different lines. Honestly, they're all pretty decent with some minor quibbles. This was our 2nd on this ship, Adventure of the Seas. Heard it is due for a major overhaul this fall (2016) but, to us, there was no sign of wear; everything looked shiny and shipshape. Our mattress was much too hard and lumpy for our taste but we like a soft bed. Wish that they'd offer a hard or soft mattress choice in cabins as we didn't sleep well all week.

The trend on many newer ships, especially Norwegian, is to offer a number of extra restaurants, such as a French restaurant, steakhouse, Asian place, etc. AOTS only has one specialty restaurant plus a hamburger joint, neither of which we patronized. Heard that RC may add a few to this ship when they refurbish it. It's nice to have a bit of variety and, on a special occasion, to go to one of these.

Now for the food. Honestly, it was just okay. First night, you'd think they'd try to impress you, right? Steak Diane! Worst piece of steak ever! Nice sauce but lots of gristle and fat around the perimeter of a very thin - maybe half inch - piece of meat. Very disappointing. Others we asked said they same thing about that dish.

Cabin Review

Superior Oceanview Stateroom with Balcony

Cabin D3

Cabin was fine and well maintained. Balcony was a nice size, somewhat larger than on some other ships we have been on. Mattress was hard and lumpy so we did not sleep well all week. Other than that, no complaints. We liked the couch in our room for sitting and reading. INTERNET service was abysmally slow and kept dropping the connection. Really bad. Speedtest app measured a "speed" of .23 mg/sec. - about dialup speed. Zzzzzz. This just HAS to get better, guys!

Port Reviews

St. Thomas

Snorkel and beach BBQ. Super trip on The Bones "pirate" ship. Our 2nd time and would do it again!

St. Croix

Cruzan Rum factory tour was very educational. We enjoyed the free samples which helped us reach "Cruzan altitude" quickly! :)

San Juan

Stayed one night prior to our cruise at the Condado Hilton in San Juan. Nice hotel, pretty huge with two buildings. Not near the old historic part of town at all but for 75 cents(exact change needed so pack some quarters!), we rode the city bus from in front of the hotel over to Old SJ to walk around, take photos and have a drink.

The National Park Service operates a free open air trolley which picks you up at the city bus station and drives you out around the fort and the old part of town.

Otherwise, San Juan struck us as a bit tired and a bit on the seedy side. Didn't seem dangerous or anything but just a big run down. Probably our first and last time there, although we do like getting to our port the night before shipping out in the winter time. Ya just never know...
