After 15 cruises with Princess and Celebrity, we took our first on Royal Caribbean. It was a true misadventure. First and foremost, the food served both in the buffet and in the dining room was dreadful. In the buffet, the food was served in tarnished pans and was unappetizing. It was the same food each day with a different colored sauce. The food in the dining room was equally tasteless and usually overcooked. Even the specialty restaurant, Giovani's, failed. The Osso Buoco was fatty and full of grizzle. Our cabin, while clean and having plenty of storage space, was directly opposite two service area doors which housed the service elevator. This was conveniently omitted from the deck plan schematic I studied. Needless to say, the noise was constant and endless. The staff was tired and listless due to the inhuman hours they are expected to work. 12 hour days, 7 days a week for 6 or 7 months! While Royal's fare is competitive, they fail to mention how they will charge you for everything else. Beverages included both a 18% service fee and port tax when applicable. Water to take ashore was $2.95 a bottle, while on the island it was $1. Not a peanut or chip at the bars or lounges, but you could buy popcorn for $2. $10. to print a boarding pass is outrageous especially since on other lines it is a service. For two ports, we did not dock near the main town thus we had to pay for water taxis/shuttles. Too, the buffet closed at 9 pm which eliminated any late night snack. Transportation to the airport was $35 per person with Royal when a taxi ride for 4 people with luggage was a total of $27. Needless to say this was our first and last cruise on Royal Caribbean!
